COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

On tap at Tap and Mallet Goose Island versus Founders event. Really black, tulip glass, thick bubble tan head. Attractive. Nose is nice and heavy, a bit of bourbon, lots of chocolate, rich. Burns a little at 1st, a bit boozy, smooths out nicely by the end as it warmed to the point I didn’t want it to end - Nice. Point to Goose Island.

Thanks to koelschtrinker for sharing this one! Pours a totally opaque black/brown with brown head. The smell is cocoa, licorice, port, molasses. Taste follows the smell with the addition of some bourbon, a little burn ending dry with a bit of char. Nice fine carbonation, the body is medium/full and slick. Super stuff!

Bottle thanks to summer santa 2013. Thank you jsquire! Pours viscous reddish black with a small frothy dark mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, dark chocolate, banana bread, vanilla ice cream, alcohol, salty liquorice candy, raisins, oatmeal cookies, caramel, soil and sweetened dark roast coffee. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and slightly estery with roasted malts, ripe banana, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream (essentially banana split), dark roast coffee, toffee, caramel, oatmeal cookies, sweet liquorice candy, vanilla fudge, alcohol and hay. Mouthfeel is round, soft, silky, tiny bitter astringent and full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, banana bread, vanilla fudge, hay, alcohol, toffee, moist soil, raisin brans and oatmeal cookies. Must confess I expected less but this is a very tasty and nicely estery imperial stout and the mouthfeel is BCBS good.

Pours deep rich burnt umber color with a finger of khaki foam. Nice chocolate brownie batter on the nose with underlying roasted earth. The palate folllows the nose with a bit more vanilla presence and even a salty umami quality that emerges later in the palate and lingers in the finish.

Taster on tap at Lackman, 2011 vintage. Black color. Good thin brown head. Decent lace. Nice dark chocolate, cocoa nibs in the nose. Hint of dark fruit, coffee, more dark fruit in the flavor, hint of molasses. Moderate sweet taste, alcohol is well-hidden. Lighter bitterness, bigger body, nice chewiness. Good creamy mouthfeel, very light smooth creamy carbonation. Vinous, kind of raisiny notes in the finish. Solid, complex 3 year old imperial stout. Very nice texture and creaminess to it, silky smooth.

Initially i got a hint of booze aroma the instant I opened the cap and thought "oh boy!" But in the glass this has a wonderful chocolate aroma over a firm maltiness. Tastes smooth and sweet with a little warmth. Much lighter palmate than expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from BrookFalls Discount with a 12/11/12 bottle date. Pours an inky black with a brown head leaving some spots of lace. Aroma has molasses, cocoa, caramel and some licorice. Somewhat roasty and strong. Taste is of sweet choco/caramel, molasses, some bittersweet bakers chocolate, a bit of grape. Thick and sweet, with the light bitter undertone. Full bodied. Finishes heavy, quite sweet and with some alcohol. Shrug thick and solid. Could use more roast in the body for better flavor.
