Draft at GI Clybourn. Pours a deep red, very attractive. Offwhite head that persists. Nose is cherry forward and then a peppery phenol. A bit odd, but okay. Notes of caramel and the phenol grows. On tasting, again, it’s cherries and then some caramel. robust malty note with some nutty malts. Kind of an odd beast, this one. The phenol doesn’t work, I’d rather see pepper than faint cloves. Meh.

Flight on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich deeper copper pour, glowing and rich, ruby red, with a bigger cakey tannish head sticks largely. Laces ok. Aromas are a mellow Belgian yeasty liveliness, pushing gentle caramel, spicy yeast, faint cocoa. Apple, pear, cinnamon, a touch of cherry moves into the fold. Initial is medium bodied offering a healthy blast of cherry, toast, biscuits. Caramel, vanilla, spicy cinnamon, yeastiness, and fruity esters of apple, pear, touches of cider. Middle shows more cherry, pit fruit, lingering and lively, doesn’t get anywhere into the medicinal realm. Touches of spice, creamy sweetness, and fruity esters assault. Finish is gentle toast and spice lingering on, yeast and some dry hops. Really nice effort here I think. Sweeter, but still workable. Doesn’t get medicinal despite the heavy cherry influence. Enjoyed.

On tap at the Clyborn location. Pours a clear deep red with a creamy off white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of cherry with backing sweet dark grains and candied sugar. Flavor is full of sweet cherries with backing candied sugar and dark fruits.

Sampler at goose clybourn... Pours a chestnut dark copper, mostly transparent, and topped with a thin wispy creamy mostly white head... Banana yeasty aroma, swee raising and rum soaked cherries with a hint of tartness on the backend... Flavors are same with a malty sweet presence where some added breadiness coexists with toffee and dark fruit undertones. An earthy finish follows up. Medium bodied with soft to medium carbonation. Ok.
