COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Belgian Style Abbey Ale brewed with Black Mission Figs

Black Mission is the definition of a collaborative effort. It is a recipe born of three brewers, inspired by two very different styles of beer, and designed to showcase the fruit for which it is named — Black Mission figs. The brewers used a simple but classic dessert as a starting point for their recipe, the fig newton. For generations, this dessert has combined the sweetness of figs with the earthy spice of a graham cracker crust. Patrick, Tim, and Gopal decided to reproduce this classic flavor profile in Black Mission by combining a beer style that has a toasty, bread-like quality with a yeast strain that has fruity esters.

This poured out as a nice looking hazy brown color with a soapy white head on top. There isn’t much lacing or retention on this one. The smell is sweet with some dark malts and fermented fruit aromas. There is also a burnt sugar aroma in there too. The taste of the beer is quite nice, it’s sweet and malty with a sugary feel to it, it’s not bitter at all, similar to a Quad but not quite. The mouthfeel is nicely carbonated and medium bodied.

On tap. Poured clear medium orange with a tight beige head. The aroma picked up sweet figs, honey, and nutty notes with a touch of peppery yeast. The flavor was candy-like.. figs, honey, and molasses at the core, with light, fresh yeasty accents.. more fruity yeast on the finish. Sweet on the palate with heavy, rolling carbonation.. filling.. became cloying after a short while.

On tap at GTMW 2012. Amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of yeast and figs and some mild fruit. The figs come through somewhat in the taste along with some yeast and fruit. Ok.

The first of two free pours was this interesting twist on a Belgian ale. Tasting a bit like boozy fruit cheesecake it has a big body to go with a big presence. Goose Island has nailed it with this one.

Aroma / Appearance - The caramel bronze body has a vibrant feel. The color of a rich sunset it warms the glass. Earth, half melted caramel chews, and pudding pops are not a standard combination but mostly work together. The base of fallen dry leaves helps ground it.

Flavor / Palate - Graham crackers, caramel, and alcohol are the primary drivers. The mouthfeel is warm and sweet. Feeling like taking sips of black cherry cheesecake covered in a fig glaze it goes down way too easily. If it weren’t for the long lines I would have gotten more on Saturday at the festival.

Deep amber pour at Madison's before GTMW, off white head - fruit and a little wood in the nose. Nice mouthfeel, a little thicker than expected. Nice dark fruit notes, spicy Belgian yeast notes and a little sweet in the finish. Well done.

On draft at brewpub, poured an amber red color with aromas of figs, light spice, some toffee, and light vanilla. Lots of flavors, but in the end it is dark fruit and figs. Nice beer overall, excited this one was still on tap when I was in Chicago. Would easily drink more of this if there was not other beers on tap that I have not tried before.

On tap at Sheffield’s. Pours a deep, ruby-brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is soft toffee-bread malts with some nuttiness, light figs with a few fruity esters, a light Belgian yeast, and a touch of earthy spice. Flavor is similar. Very soft, bready malts throughout with a light toasted nut and a lightly sweetened toffee. Some dark fruits in the middle with a light figgy note along with some soft Belgian yeast. A hint of vanilla, a touch of earthy spice, and a slight graham cracker note before this finishes very smooth and soft with a touch of spice to balance the malts. Fairly lengthy aftertaste following an ultra-smooth, medium body and a soft, creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, I was a pretty big fan of this. Really creamy and smooth throughout and extremely easy drinking. Soft, lightly sweetened malts with some figgy dark fruits and a light Belgian yeast aspect. Good beer.

Thick mission fig flavor, sweet but not quote cloying. Overall quite nice, but I couldn’t have more than one.
