beernbourbon (997) - St. Louis, USA - JUL 22, 2009
On tap at Clybourn. Pour is cloudy ruby red with a thick and creamy head. Aroma is bourbon, toffee, plums, dried fruits, vanilla, and faint coconut. Flavor is very creamy and smooth. Vanilla and toffee dominate at first. Then hints of fruity sweetness and more vanilla interject. Finish is lasting with notes of coconut, vanilla, bourbon, and slightly hoppy dryness. This beer was amazing as far as Im concerned. I do not know how many batches there have been, but what I just drank was ridiculous.

~2 oz sample had at the Claybourn Brewpub. 3.5 A: Slightly hazy golden/straw color. Can’t comment much on the head since it was a 2 oz sample. 4.0 S: Lots of alcohol in the nose. Also a very strong wheat component. Lastly, a strong oak and bourbon flair. The nose is just jam packed with strong aromas. 4.5 T: This is my first wheatwine and I must say that the "wine" part is very fitting. It tastes just like a light wine only with a strong wheat flavor. Not much hops going on. I like wine just fine, but I like beer more and this is somewhere inbetween. Well done. Alcohol is present in the taste like a wine. 3.0 M: Heavy medium body. Low on carbonation though. It might be perfect for the style, I don’t really know, however, I would have liked a bit more carbonation. Not so smooth due to the tinge of alcohol. 3.5 D: Good tasty brew, but not all that drinkable due to the biting alcohol. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 06-28-2009 04:17:25

On tap at clybourn brewpub. Poured a dark golden color with a light head. Awesome wheat and bourbon flavor. This beer did well in the barrels.

On tap at Clybourn location. Pours an amber color with a beige head. Rich bourbon buttery nose. Dark fruits, caramel, and grain barely peak out underneath that bourbon. Rich sweet malt and bourbon flavors. The bourbon becomes more apparent as it warms up, but still really tasty. Finishes dry. 8/4/8/4/15

CaptainCougar (6835) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUL 5, 2010
On tap at Clybourn location: Pours a clear copper orange with a thin ring of white bubbles. Has a big bourbon woody oak aroma with some light cardboard, caramel, and vanilla notes. Starts with pretty good fullness and light caramely sweet wheat with a touch of oxidation and big bourbon oaky flavor before a drier, woody, slightly warming finish. The barrel seems to dominate here and there’s a little too much oxidation.

When the beer is slightly chilled, it has some nice fruity tastes, touches of vanilla, oak, and even the hint that this is a wheat beer. Unfortunately with warmth it becomes really bourbon-heavy, corn sweetness dominating and making other elements of the beer less noticeable. I dunno what to say, I’d like to try this beer in a better environment than a bar to see what I think of the overall flavor profile but life is life. And at 10 bucks a snifter, I would never consider revisiting it.

On tap at the Clybourn pub. Pours cloudy orange gold in a snifter. Aroma is sugary wheat. Flavor is surprisingly similar to a breakfast cereal, maybe Corn Pops or something. Wheat and sweet. Not bad necessarily, but striking in its similarity. Hints of bourbon come through stronger as I drink more.

Draft at the Goose Island’s Clybourn location. Pour is a cloudy brownish orange. Taste is bready, vanilla, bourbon notes. Silky smooth. By far my favorite of the night. However, tastes a bit young & could use a bit more time in the barrels.

draft @ GI Clybourn. Amber orange pour. Caramel malts, bourbon, oak with light vanilla in the aroma. Taste was rich maltiness, oaky bourbon, nice alcohol burn, balanced but still pretty intense. Nice offering from Goose Island

Tasted on draft at Goose Island Clybourn. Pours a clear amber with almost no head. Aromas of caramel malt, sour fruit, and lots of oak. The flavors are slightly sweet up front with caramel malts, and it is very oaky. The bitter hops come through on the mid-palate and the back of the palate. The body is full with medium carbonation and a sweet and oaky finish. Overall, this is a very good beer that, I think, requires some more aging time for the oak and alcohol to integrate.
