3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft sample at the FoBAB documentary party, 1/12/13. Deep amber color, a little brown. Thin ring of foam in my plastic cup. Smells very, very grainy, like a bag of wheat. Very thick texture and alcohol presence. Little notes of cherry, plus prune and smoke. A lot more sweet and thick than many other barley wines Iíve know.
Earlier Rating: 11/5/2007 Total Score: 4.5
FoBAB 2007, Chicago. Just the foam is enough to get you a good buzz (if I can decipher my notes correctly). Big heady white foam over a luminous brown body. Very much barley wine smell. No alcohol or dark malt harshness in taste, just a sweet malt and bourbon flavor with a interesting complement of hops (if it was so interesting, why couldnít I describe it better?) Just the perfect thing to get s---faced with. Case in point.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at the source... Pours a toffee caramel hued hue and topped with a fluffy head that eve fully reduces down to a wispy film... Big bourbony barrel essence with deep rich toffee and caramel tones throughout. Barrel is fairly a abundant and runs rampant. A mild alcohol bitterness surfaces and is noticeable through the finish... Flavor is more of the same with a semi-sweet profile upfront with a pretty noticeable bitterness late on through the finish. Bourbon and buttery toffee exists with quite a boozy astringent finish. Body is lighter than expected. A bit too over-barreled.

FOBAB í07....appearance: dark caramel brown with a thin ivory head....aroma: all i smell in this one is bourbon vanilla and booze....taste: candied brown sugar, bourbon, and a little too sweet overall.....i very much preferred wooden hell to this but not a bad offering overall.
10/31/08 On tap at GI Cly. Nice to be able to sit down with this one. aroma is pretty much the same but the flavors had more variety this time around. some bitterness in the finish cut into the bourbon and toffee flavors. a lot nicer this time around.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours an orange color with a good head and some lacing on the glass.
The aroma is resiny with some orange rind, marmalade and some brown sugar. The barrel character is subdued and lends a light vanilla character to the nose.
The flavor is sweet but nicely bitter, some vanilla and toasty malt. The alcohol is warming but not overbearing, similar things can be said for the woodiness. A bright tasting barleywine.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours a clear deep amber with a near white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a lot of sweet grains with a bit of sweet light fruit, caramel and a bit of barrel. Flavor is sweet with grains and toffee with the bourbon coming through towards the finish.
Earlier Rating: 8/3/2009 Total Score: 3.6
On tap at Clybourn. Poured an orange amber with an off-white head. Aroma consisted of notes of fruits, sweet grain and bourbon. Started a bit grainy sweet and then the alcohol takes over leading to a finish of almost purely alcohol. Nice and thick on the tongue.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Fobab. Definitely not better than King Henry but beat it at fobab. Dark golden orange with a fluffy off white head. Earthy hop oil, bourbon and caramel aroma. Earthy, brassy, caramel, bourbon, and alcohol taste with a sharp dry finish and an oily sticky palate.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
~2 oz sample had at the Claybourn Brewpub.
3.5 A: Slightly hazy golden/straw color. Canít comment much on the head since it was a 2 oz sample.
4.0 S: Lots of alcohol in the nose. Also a very strong wheat component. Lastly, a strong oak and bourbon flair. The nose is just jam packed with strong aromas.
4.5 T: This is my first wheatwine and I must say that the "wine" part is very fitting. It tastes just like a light wine only with a strong wheat flavor. Not much hops going on. I like wine just fine, but I like beer more and this is somewhere inbetween. Well done. Alcohol is present in the taste like a wine.
3.0 M: Heavy medium body. Low on carbonation though. It might be perfect for the style, I donít really know, however, I would have liked a bit more carbonation. Not so smooth due to the tinge of alcohol.
3.5 D: Good tasty brew, but not all that drinkable due to the biting alcohol.
Serving type: on-tap
