3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 holdenn (2023) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 9, 2012
Sampled at Fobab 2011. Black with a beige head. Rich aromas bourbon some fruit. I could see it as marchino cherries. Bitter roast and chocolate sweetness with cherries. Booze in the finish. The cherries aren’t overwhelming but the booze is a little more. Decent but I’d rather do other versions over this one. 8/3/8/3/15

8/11/12. GTMW. Oily black pour with a small tan head, less of a head than usual BCS. In general, in all aspects, this mostly strikes me as sweeter than regular/most BCS. The aroma shows some of the usual BCS aspects - chocolate, fudge, bourbon, wood, coffee, etc. - but with more sweetness, perhaps the vermouth, extra whiskey, etc. The flavor is much the same and the sweetness comes through to me even more. Still pretty tasty and definitely unique. Props to GI.

Tap at GTMW. Dark black pour, very little carbonation and a slightly subdued and sweeter aroma of the normal BCS. Flavor is just a hint slightly sweet vermouth and whiskey blended with chocolate you’d expect from the normal BCS. Way more mellow than the regular version, and very enjoyable.

Handbottle courtesy of Shaun. Oily glugging pour with very little head. Huge vanilla and chocolate notes with hints of dark fruit and mocha-brownie. Thick rich palate with a velvety mouthfeel and a slick finish. Great incarnation of this brew.

Thanks to Greg for this one. Pours a slick, oily black with no head. Nose holds lots of boozy heat, fairly prominent vanilla and cherry, chocolate ganache, touches of port, marzipan and roasted espresso. Flavor is truly lovely, with gorgeous rich chocolate truffle and sweet molasses up front, with heat and more vinous tones on the back end. Beautiful mouthfeel, silky and decadent. Very very nice.

Tasted on draft at FoBAB 2011. Pours opaque, coffee black with a thin brown head that leaves a thin collar of lace. The nose is sweet vermouth and bourbon with vanilla, coffee, and milk chocolate. The flavor is the same with sweet vermouth, vanilla, coconut, coffee, and milk chocolate. This is really cool. It smells and tasted just like a Manhattan cocktail. The body is full and creamy with light carbonation and a long sweet vermouth finish. I found out, after the fact, that I got to taste the barrel aged Manhattan that was made in this barrel at the Violet Hour. I think that this is very cool.

Fobab 11. This was a bit of an enigma for me. I love the idea....it had its merits. The liquor mixed drink aspect was’t overly present which I preferred....but at the same time, there was something about a Manhattan that makes it such and not a beer. Still roasty chocolate and hints of dark fruit, leaving a booze note in the finish.

On tap at Fobab 9. Pours near black with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, vanilla, cherries, and bourbon. Flavors of bourbon, chocolate, cherries, vanilla, and fair amount of sweetness and booze. Mouthfeel was a little thin compared to regular BCS. Still has that nice silky quality though. I thought it worked well as it is kind of hard to mess up the base beer.
