COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Always on the lookout for the next thing they can throw in a barrel, our brewers actually looked no further than their own backyard for this release – literally. Inspired by the berries they remember first eating from the trees in their yards; this Bourbon County release is full of the dark, spicy, and pleasantly sweet flavors of mulberries, marionberries, and boysenberries. This trio of fruit nicely rounds out the spice and heat of the rye whiskey barrels in which they were aged, resulting in a smooth, jammy stout perfect for sipping on your back porch.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 This was really good. The aroma was sweet berries, coffee, chocolate and boozy. Taste just like it smelled. The finish is where I think this one becomes a very good beer and makes it stand out from others. Think of really good quality dark chocolate and raspberry candy flavor. Yes candy, there is a sweetness in the beer that reminds me of the candy.

Superbe.

Bottle 1444 (?) at home, sampled at cellar temperature. Pours deep dark brown with an intense ruby red huie, beautifully coloured head but dissipating very quickly. Little bummer on that part. Aroma is rich molasse and caramel with a nice forest fruit touch to it, especially raspberries and blackberries. Don’t get the spicy notes they refer to, but I do get a little of the alcohol, and as Always, lots of the bourbon heat. Medium body, sweet and some fruity sourness, in the back quite a lot of alcohol heat. The taste is marvelous: loads of the roasty malts, coffee and a long aftertaste of pure forest fruits. I doubt a bit if the fruits are real; I miss the fruit tartness in this beer, it’s a tad too jammy and sticky. A nice beer overall.

"Fantastic brew, as expected. Even some head on this monster. Jammy quality, like the Bramble Rye, but slightly less in the nose and palate, and a big huge hit of chocolate and berries in the (lingering) aftertaste. Roast, cocoa, vanilla, berry jam, whiskey. Good "balance". Sticky, but ridiculously smooth for nearly 13%. A welcome addition to the BCS line (though for my money, the cheaper BCS coffee is the way to go). Best of 2014!!! So far..."

On tap at Brouwer’s for Migration Week. Really interesting twist on this brew. The berries really come through strongly, making it almost like a cordial - the bourbon and vanilla somehow migrate toward chocolate. A little overbearing; I think they actually detract from the brew. Still damn good, just not my favorite variant.

On tap at brouwers. Pours black. Sweet berry smell and flavor. Blends well with the bourbon. Good balance.

Bottled November 20, 2013.
Glass: Dogfish Head signature glass.
Appearance: Pitch black body with a fizzy/quickly dissipating brown head. It settles into a spotty coating with a dense ring.
Aroma: The aroma is big and complex. I’m getting big barrel notes (bourbon and oak tannins) along with big syrupy fruit. The aroma is a bit hot, even almost a year later. The smell comes off a bit like rubbing alcohol. Not bad, but not good.
Taste: Big raspberry intro with whiskey and cocoa during the mid. The finish is a bit boozy and the fruit is a syrupy from start to finish. Not my favorite variant by a long shot.
Palate: Thinner than I’d like and syrupy, practically no carbonation.
Overall: This comes off as a syrupy and boozy disappointment for me. I’d take many other stouts over this, especially when considering the rarity and price of this.

750 ml bottle shared with the Quebec City crew. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is grapes, blackberries, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is berries, dark chocolate, wood, liquor, red wine. Finish is tart, spicy, fruity, roasty. Lingering medicine-ish flavor. Medium to full body, soft mouthfeel, weak carbonation.

22 oz bottle. Dark brown with a brief tan head. Nose is chocolate, boysenberry, mulberry, but i wouldn’t have guessed, cherry and more wood than rye. Beautiful medium to full body typical of BCBS, perfectly accented by the berry tartness played off the dry rye. Each sip is like a whiskey soaked chocolate covered black cherry. The depth of the berries and spice from the barrel expertly compliment the base beer. Yum, yum.
