COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Always on the lookout for the next thing they can throw in a barrel, our brewers actually looked no further than their own backyard for this release – literally. Inspired by the berries they remember first eating from the trees in their yards; this Bourbon County release is full of the dark, spicy, and pleasantly sweet flavors of mulberries, marionberries, and boysenberries. This trio of fruit nicely rounds out the spice and heat of the rye whiskey barrels in which they were aged, resulting in a smooth, jammy stout perfect for sipping on your back porch.

BERRIES. BERRIES. BERRIES. Nose is loaded with berries. Flavor is jammy with cocoa and some bourbon. A touch too boozy, but so loaded with berry flavor that I cannot help but enjoy it. A very different take on BCBS, but I admire it.

750 ml bottle shared with the Quebec City crew. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is grapes, blackberries, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is berries, dark chocolate, wood, liquor, red wine. Finish is tart, spicy, fruity, roasty. Lingering medicine-ish flavor. Medium to full body, soft mouthfeel, weak carbonation.

22 oz bottle. Dark brown with a brief tan head. Nose is chocolate, boysenberry, mulberry, but i wouldn’t have guessed, cherry and more wood than rye. Beautiful medium to full body typical of BCBS, perfectly accented by the berry tartness played off the dry rye. Each sip is like a whiskey soaked chocolate covered black cherry. The depth of the berries and spice from the barrel expertly compliment the base beer. Yum, yum.

bomber, wow this is jammy. Like raspberry jam, some of the rye spiciness is in the background which is cool. The base beer is awesome so theres no way of screwing this up. Well done belgians.

2014.08.17 - Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Backyard Rye Barrel - 22 oz bottle in goblet. Aroma: Obvious same BCS aroma when pouring 7/10 Appearance: Nearly jet black like BCS, minimal to no head. 3/5 Taste: About what you expect. It’s still clearly BCS. It’s not tart or "juicy" but the berries are prominent. Honestly the berry is a bit floral and aroma, and buried while prominent if that makes sense. The berry comes forward more and overall flavor improves as it warms. It’s similar to the marionberry in Rogue’s Marionberry Braggot. Pretty good. 8/10 Palate: medium body, medium creamy/oily texture, nearly flat carbonation, long finish of floral berry. 3/5 Overall: If the more stout-y dark roasted stuff in BCS put you off, or the heavy vanilla sort of notes, then this might be up your alley as it seems to subdue both. The ABV is a bit lower as well, by about 2%. I can agree with others who said it’s a bit more berry than they wanted. I still enjoy it but I totally understand that. For the price these things go for you want to at least recognize it is indeed a BCS. An enjoyable BCS variant, questionable if it’s worth the premium prices. Make sure you indeed want a BCS with prominent berries because that is what you’ll get. 16/20

On tap at belmont in PDX The usual black used motor oil appearence. Nose carries some extra berry character, mostly a blackberry character IMO. The flavor is of course the previously well known BCBS a touch of sharpness from the rye with some unsweetened mixed berry jam and a little extra acidity and near astringency. The berries a just too much here. Full bodied with low carb and a sticky finish. Well, meh for the series.

Thanks to TJ for the bomber! Poured black with a short-lived charred beige head. The aroma picked up a whole bunch of berries, dark chocolate, and coffee notes with accents of spicy black pepper, rye, and sweet whiskey.. burned a few nose hairs on the back (in a good way). The flavor found spicy rye and bourbon on the tip of the tongue, with tart berries laced throughout.. burnt black malts and dark chocolate at the core.. tart with belly-warming whiskey and spices on finish. Heavy-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. just a hair more berries than I wanted, but that’s more of a personal preference. Great brew!

Almost black pour with small quickly disappearing tan head. Aroma of chocolate, raspberry jam, vanilla, caramel and bourbon. Taste of chocolate fudge, caramel, slight coffee, vanilla, bourbon up front. Blackberries, cherries and raspberries in the middle and a nice whiskey finish. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, lower carbonation. One of the best beers I have had all year long. EXCELLENT!!

Cereal, cocoa, molasses aroma. A lot of berry flavor, with sweet, roasted malt. Subtle whiskey flavor.

Appearance: Pours dark brown with no head.

Aroma: Raspberry jam, chocolate covered raspberry jellies. Bourbon.

Taste: Chocolate, bourbon, fresh tangy berry, oak , dark red oak wine.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied,low carbonation.

Overall: This is just taking the already sweet BCS to sweeter levels. It’s fun in a 2 oz. pour, but nothing you would drink much more of. I prefer BCS straight up.
