Everyday Goose Island smells the wonderful coffee roasting next to our brewery at Chicago’s Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea. This world class roaster puts the same passion and skill into their coffee as Goose Island does with its beer. This excellent stout is made with a different coffee from our friends next door each year. With the change in coffee comes a change in the flavor profile, making each release truly unique from the previous years.

- First bottle release seen in Spring 2010 as "Bourbon County Coffee Stout".

2014 bottle. Black with little crimson around the edges. Aroma is a chocolate covered cherry with a little musty coffee. Taste is alcohol immediately, but changes quickly to a dark chocolate syrup. A sweetness develops in the middle along with some vanilla and cherry at the end. Fairly roasty throughout. Not much coffee except for the same musty, earthiness that's in the smell. The mouthfeel is thinner than the regular Bourbon County. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled on November 7th, drank on November 29th. Pretty much pitch black, no head. Smells of earthy coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, musty, a little cherry. Taste is the earthy coffee, chocolate syrup, cherry, vanilla, bourbon, oak. Mouth a little thinner than expected, but still coats. Coffee becomes more apparent as you drink, there is some alcohol burn but not too distracting. The chocolatey flavors stick around through the whole drink. Minor bit of roasted hop towards the end. Overall excellent as expected, I like it equally as well as the regular BCS, the coffee adds just a tad bit more complexity in a subtle way. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft, 2014 version – fresh! Pours faintly red tinged mahogany, small head. Aroma is intense fruity espresso and bitter Valrhona chocolate, toasted marshmallow, caramelized hazelnut, nougat, blueberry, blackberry, coffee ice cream, bourbon on the finish along with intense 99% cacao goodness and what seems like oak tannins. So big, so bold, so much coffee. Alcohol is well hidden. Great.

2014 bottling. The pour is jet black with a half finger cola brown head that dissipates almost immediately. The aroma is coffee ice cream, bourbon, and a tiny bit of barrel. The taste is really complex. It's like the very best coffee ice cream mixed with a bourbon shot. There's lots of other things going on like vanilla, wood, alcohol esters. It's amazing. The finish is slick and viscous. Just insane. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pitch black in color... Big bourbon aroma with prominent notes of espresso, dark chocolate... Flavor is rich and bold coffee, dominates beer, with notes of bourbon, caramel, vanilla... Coffee and dark chocolate finish.... Solid ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. This beer is dangerously smooth! Pours like motor oil with quickly disappearing head. Nose and taste is chocolate and coffee. Just a little bourbon. Outstanding!

2013 btl. Pour from a bottle is a nice dark chocolate with a dark tan head while the aroma has a very soft coffee note mixed with a little chocolate. Taste is a little sweet from the barrel aging mixed a strong chocolate taste. Leaves a dry after taste on the tongue.

November 2, 2014. Bottle at home, 2013 vintage. Trade with Fbc24, thanks Frank! Black with almost no head, a very small tan ring. Aroma is lots of cold pressed coffee, green paprika, oak, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and light alcohol notes. Taste is bitter chocolate and coffee, sweet caramel and bourbon, warming alcohol finish. Smooth, thick and oily soft small bubble carbonation.

This is review of 2013 vintage Pours a jet black body, 1/4 inch tan head. Lacing was above average and head retention was ok Smell is of sweet booze, burnt malt, dark chocolate and a little coffee. For 13 percent, alcohol scent isn’t too much. Taste is big on fudge, vanilla, bourbon soaked oak, and slightly acidic coffee. Smoky, roasted, almost burnt malts offset the sweetness nicely. As beer warms slight bourbon after burn kicks in, kinda nice for cold weather drinking. At a year old, the coffee has faded a bit, 6 months old is probably its prime drinking age. Mouthfeel is nice, good amount of carbonation for a beer with a thick consistency. Head died prematurely, which prevented it from being a perfect 5. Overall this beer holds its own with the best of them. Rich in smell, taste, and body, very hard to find a coffee stout that rivals it. Unfortunately it is becoming harder to find but I look forward to hunting down a couple bottles every year.
