4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft on tap at the CBC GI Industry Party (Chicago, IL). Later available at DLD ’10. Backlog. Pours a rich dark blackish brown hue, thick with legs as it swirls, opaque in nature, small brownish head atop, darker as it dies to a decent ring and laces ok. Aromas are a sizable quanitity of roast and toast dancing with a healthy dose of oak, vanilla, and Bourbon spirit. Rich raspberry pulp and tannins mix with cocoa, caramel, and toffee sweetness, giving a distinct fruity tart pulpy quality on the nose. Initial is full on the palate, offering a lovely clash of flavors with the typical and warming oak and vanilla, Bourbon and cocoa, caramel and some roastiness lingering on the palate. The distinct pulpy raspberry chocolate essence lives on, tannins and berry filled, a touch tart and jammy work well with the barrel and fuller base beer isn’t overrun by the addition. Finish is pleasant, berry tannins hang on with the oak and barrel, sweet malts and vanilla tannins, cocoa and roast. Very well done. A nice clash of flavors that work well, very desserty reminding me of raspberry dark chocolate with doses of barrel.
