Tap @ GI Wrigleyville 15th anniversary: pitch black with small head and minimal lace. Big char and roast with red whiny notes. Moderate pumpernickel and coffee notes. The mouth feel is aggressive and ashy, slight sticky notes. Just seems a tad washed out but still very tasty.

Swing top growler, from beerlistman, thanks! Look and mouthfeel of regular bourbon county. Doesn’t have as pronounced of a whiskey note. Has a caramel taste that I don’t think I’ve noticed anywhere else. Makes it like a bourbon milky way once it warms. Very good stuff.

Draft at FoBAB. Pours dark brown to black in color with a thin beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, spicy rye, bourbon, wood, burnt caramel, molasses and vanilla. I liked it, but not as much as the original.

Tap at FOBAB. Super smooth, tasted a lot to me like ’08 BCBS. Really fantastic.

Draft at Olympic. From notes. Oak, vanilla and rye notes. Pretty darn good. Very thick and sticky, very sweet. Would be very happy to drink this one again.

Draft to taster at FoBAB 2013, pours opaque black. Nose a little muted bourbon and some vanilla. Taste bourbon and rye in the taste. Not as alcoholic astringent as some.

Sample bottle at Goose for the Black Friday event 29 November, 2013. Glad I got to try the base for some of the BCS variants. This is not something you will see very often. Pitch black oily type of color. Aromas are rye malts, coffee dregs, a touch of vanilla bourbon and pumpernickel bread. Flavor is powerful notes of booze, dark roasted malts, burnt rye bread and vanilla oak. Secondary flavors of dark chocolate and cold coffee. Rye whiskey makes itself known to me in the finish. The 13.5 % gives a warming after the sip yet alcohol doesn’t distract from the flavor. I still really enjoyed this base rye stout.

This is GI’s Rye barrel stout which serves as the base for a few variants which are so far, Cherry Rye, Bramble Rye, Backyard Bramble and Coconut (Proprietor’s). I had a few ounces on tap at Goose Island. It won’t see distribution outside of special events.

A - Appearance is almost identical to regular BCS aside from a different sheen / shine on the top of the beer. Pitch black / oily.

S - Very spicy. Lots of gingerbread and spicy peppercorn. I get the standard chocolate / espresso bean character. no licorice but back of throat burn on a big whiff is constant.

T - Taste is thin and the rye spice and bite comes dead last after every other flavor fleets away. It lacks the vanilla I expected and has a big rose petal taste mid-way through.

M - Creamy, heavy and sweet.

O - My least favorite of the batch. Rye tends to not tingle the tongue or explode in the way I would hope. I love rye whiskey but this one was not as good as the other variants and I didn’t finish my glass.

November 29, 2013 - via bottle at Goose for the Black Friday event. Black pour with limited head. Aroma was whiskey, spice and chocolate. Taste was consistent with the aroma. A very nice variation and not nearly as hot as the regular fresh, but did not have the depth of aroma and flavor as the regular.

Draft to taster at FoBAB. Looks good; a fairly opaque dark brownish black with foamy tan head. Smells good too; sweet and malty with a nice rye barrel presence. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel and a touch of rye on on the tongue. Good stuff!
