COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Black with blackish color and a black tint. Opaque like tar. Not much head, a layer of brown lace on the edges. The aroma is full of alcohol and tons of smoky roasted chocoaltey malts, the bourbon is very apparent, just like the full sail bourbon imperial porter, as such there's some vanilla and scotch notes too. The flavor is very acidic and roasty, almost like instant heartburn feeling while it's going down (I don't ever get heartburn). The finish burns but is balanced. Another good bourbon imperial, this is simply dreadful! Thanks Mike!

Black. Like a starless night.. wait, ok, so it's black, no head really, and some lacing. Roast, coffee, some bourbon and just a hint of chocolate. Bourbon is there in the lead. Chocolate comes out a lot more in the flavors, followed by dark cherries, vanilla, and floral hops. Just a little bit smoky. Thick oily body, a huge malty body, and a finish of bourbon touched hops and alcohol. Nice.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2004 Opaque black with tan bubbles around the edges. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and some bourbon. Chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon taste. Not a bad bourbon aged Imperial, but not exactly one that rocked my world.

Bottle. Dark black color with a thick pour and minimal to no head. The bourbon aroma is strong with vanilla, raisins, smoke, and rich sweet malts. A thick syrupy-like body with a dark fruit, rich malt, and warming alcohol finish. Thanks to lowerdsixth for the trade.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2007 Nice oily pour, with not a lot of carbonation or head. There’s a dominant whiskey aroma, nice vanilla. The flavor is a bit like chocolate milk with a shot of whiskey in it. It’s a bit lighter than I’d like it, though. Too much bourbon really.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2006 Time heals. Tasting this again gives me a profound respect for making something that is different. The oak and vanilla are predominant on the front,while the smoothness of the malt overdose is appreciated. The lingering mouthfeel is divine. I must’ve been drinking from the bottom of the barrel on a prior tasting. 2 oz at Southeastern Gathering. The aroma hinted at something that would be strong. Very bold smoked flavor. There is almost a buttery quality that threw me off, and I couldn’t get over it. The bite was a little overwhelming as well.

Huge maple and whiskey aroma, huge maple and whiskey flavor. Sweet and smooth, big hints of whiskey dwelling within traditional flavors. Vey Nice. Sampled at Ratebeer Southeastern Gathering, Atlanta, 2004.

I need to come right out and say that more than a little bourbon flavor in a beer bothers me. It almost seems as though they are covering up a flaw using potent alcohol. I did enjoy the underlying flavors of dark bittersweet chocolate and the slightly smoky, very creamy qualities. The aroma was top-notch -- liquid fudge deepened by walnuts and surrounded by buttery bourbon. I agree with herbjones, it did seem a lot more potent that it actually was.

Opaque black body with a small khaki head that quickly disappears. Bready malt aroma with hints of raisin and a some clear bourbon notes. Malty, with hints of raisin, licorice and a very slight vanilla note. Finish is smokey and dry with some deffinite bourbon and woody notes. Alcohol comes through a bit much in the finish, but other than that this a very nice stout.

Coal black pour with no head, just a thin ring of tan bubbles. Nose has is overpowering with alcohol. 9.1% and I would swear it was twice that. Big thick creamy palate. Flavor has hints of vanilla with some oakiness at the front but then the alcohol hits and obliterates everytnig.
