"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that itís a great cigar beer, but I havenít yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Editorís Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences separates the beers. Itís essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

Pours inky (the sun wonít shine through it) dark brown with a medium coffee head. Nose is very complex. Starts with vanilla, cream, oak barrel. There is a charcoal note. There is chocolate, cherries, and dried plums. Flavor is very sweet but not cloying. This is a sipping beer. There is a little bitterness. Alcohol is hidden in the mouth but present in a warming as it goes down, and in a head rush. Heavy, oily mouthfeel. Long charcoal aftertaste. Brilliant.

On tap to mini snifter. Pours black, brown ring head. Aroma of chocolate, barrel oak, creme brulee, bourbon. The barrel flavor is huge but smooth and balanced.

Awesome stout. Tried multiple times. Barrel flavor is huge, a bit boozy and hot, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and everything good is in this bottle. 2009 vintage bottle was the best Iíve tried, and that bottle probably deserved a solid 4.7. But in average, I say 4.3

Pours cola black with thin head. Aromas of vanilla bean, cacao, caramel, and bourbon; In-cred-i-ble. Taste is nearly identical to nose, but so smooth and creamy that it shouldn't be possible. Vanilla, caramel, slightly smoky, the barrel-flavor present but not overbearing. Worth waiting for, and worth the price if you can find it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hazy, dark brown to black, thick and syrupy, flat, small to no head. Aroma is of brown sugar, molasses, caramel, some chocolate, roasted malt, strong vanilla and bourbon barrel, light alcohol. Taste is very sweet brown sugar, molasses, caramel and some chocolate, strong vanilla and bourbon, oak, roasted malt, medium roasty bitterness, some alcohol but mostly very well hidden, some warmth in the finish, long lasting aftertaste. Full bodied, flat, thick and bit sticky. (bottle from the brewery from a colleague who did some commissioning there)

Drank from a sample glass, shared amongst friends. Pours black, zero head. Amazing aromas of chocolate and caramel. Nice flavor, a bit of a burn from the bourbon but nothing extreme. Well done!

Big. Boozy. Complex. Balanced. Lots of chocolate and bourbon and dark fruit. Nice little alcoholic warmth. Real treat.

Catch up rating from Saturdayís RIS bottle share. Big boozy aroma, taste with plenty of burn. Muddy, black pour, kind of dull, but looks as expected. Sip slowly to savor the flavor, but not slow enough to singe your nose hairs with the burn. Will warm you up fast.
