"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that itís a great cigar beer, but I havenít yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Editorís Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences seperates the beers. Itís essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

This is one of the best imperial stouts I have ever tasted. So rich, with a straight bourbon nose that leads into smooth dark chocolate on the palate. Finishes with a bitterness that only adds to its dark chocolate flavor. Itís almost 15 percent ABV but you canít taste it.

Review of the 2014 vintage. You can tell from the pour that this is a very viscous beer. Just a small dark colored head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is big on bourbon without having any offensive alcohol burn. Taste is awesome: chocolate, caramel, toffee, vanilla and the specific coconut from the bourbon barrels. Long caramely aftertaste. Dense and silky body with very well hidden alcohol. I enjoyed it more than the 2013 vintage. This might be a "Top 10" beer for me.

Originally reviewed on 9/27/2011. 12 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. Pitch black with some transparency at the edges. No head, a slight wisp of lace, otherwise lifeless. Bourbon aroma like no other. A lot of booze, too. Bourbon taste up front, with a strong chocolate malt midrange flavor. Really exceptional taste. Not really complex, I suppose, but the stout flavor is there and the bourbon complements it really well. It finishes chocolatey and boozy as hell. Tastes every bit of 13% and possibly more. Tingly in the mouth, so much so that itís tough to tell the carbonation levels. Definitely a sipper. This is one of those beers where the taste is so good that it outweighs the flaws of the rest of the beer. Itís boozy and it looks the lower side of mediocre, but it tastes amazing.

12 oz bottle - pours black as night with a slight head that is a desert tan color. The aroma is huge and intense - full of dark chocolate, espresso, black licorice, a hint of bourbon and burnt bread. A mouthful is thick and viscous. Flavor is intense with anise, bitter chocolate, aged bourbon, coffee, prune juice and a hint of boozy heat. Truly a treat.

Excellent bourbon stout. My only complaint is that it is almost just a little too boozy. It very much is like drinking a glass of bourbon. Canít wait to try on a cold winterís night

Heavy bourbon and vanilla smell. Taste is a very boozy stout with bourbon, vanilla, and light chocolate. Thick but too boozy for my tastes.

12 oz bottle, one of four from a $20 4 pack, hope itís worth the hype and $$ price tag.
Black, with ruby edges, nice thick tan head that recedes like a nitro stout head.
Big boozy bourbon aroma hits you first, but as it settles down, you get molasses, vanilla, oak, liquorice. Flavor is equally complex. Smooth, sweet, chocolaty entry, leads to molasses, vanilla, oak, tobacco, liquorice, bourbon, caramel, smoke. High ABV is well hidden, but it starts to lean a little too much to the sweet side before the glass is finished. But yeah, Iíd buy it again. Note to Greg Hall.There are several cigars that would stand up to and pair well with this beer. If you are going with cigars legal in the U.S, Padron Anniversario, Rocky Patel, Alec Bradley Black Market, Montecristo White label, Camacho, Fuente Sungrown, Ashton VSG. As far as the not legal in the U.S for now Cuban cigars, try Partagas serie D no 3, Bolivar Royal Corona. anything Montecristo.

Not my favorite bourbon barrel aged beer. Found it it be to far tpped to the sweet side flavor wise. Palate was smooth and slightly oily. Medium full body. Aroma was dominated by sweet bourbon with some chocolate notes. expected morefrom this highly hyped beer. Prefer the coffee version by far.
