COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Editor’s Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences seperates the beers. It’s essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

Pitch black, some small head. Black velvety chocolate and good quality coffee. Some vanilla at front. Later coffee pops up. Rich, very well made stout.

Smallest ullaged bottle to memory (Less than a cm.). Jet black color with a smaller bigger bubbled brown head. Slick and oily appearance. Mellow aromas. Lots of malt with mild licorice, vanilla, stewed prunes and oak cask wood. Slick and thick on the tongue. Not the normal thick, this is real syrupy thick stuff. Charcoal flavored blackberries, smothered with lighter fluid. The flames could be substantial. I think this could be a great steak marinade for black bavarian grill.

Bottle. Very dark rusted red color, no head. Big whiskey and alcohol aroma. Coconut. Whiskey dominates the palate. Chocolate and cream in there too. Finish is smooth and bitter, something that is usually not seen in hot beers like this one.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2006 Extremely dark brown with a minimal tan head. No carbonation. Very sweet aroma with some muted liquor notes. There’s molasses in there, too. Very heavy wood/liquor flavor with a sticky-sweet aftertaste and feel. I enjoyed the barrel flavor, but the overall taste is way too sweet. Re-rating 3/5/2006, bottle. What was I thinking back in ’03? I tried the beer at the JoeM500 B-day gathering at FFF, must have been the cold affecitng my palate. Black body, tan head. Alcoholic chooclate cake nose with woody bourbon notes. The flavor is consistent throughout - dense chocolate/pale sweetness, a sharp alcohol kick, and smokey-ham bouron. Nice mouthfeel on this one - sips with a velvety smoothness that compliments the alcohol well.

Bottle 2009 Edition. Dark black beer with a light fairly brown head. The aroma is quite deeply roasted with a port like feel, and the flavour is very rich, malty and fairly bitter. Overall a nice very strongly flavoured beer.

Had this one bottled at our Kentucky Derby party 2008, and a big thanks to Arnie for the four-pack!! Impossibly dark brown pour, completely opaque, with a thick but rapidly dissipating medium brown head. Possibly the darkest head ever. Also, possibly the more intense nose. Dark chocolate malts, apricot and plum, combined with merlot in the nose. Very potent flavor too, but extremely smooth. Fine bitter chocolate, raisin, cocoa powder, sweet strong coffee with a fine, high-proof bourbon note tying it all together. Very, very strong alcohol presence in the finish. Very sippable, but not highly drinkable. I don’t typically care for beers this intense and strong, and while this one did not disappoint, I am not a huge fan of this style. I do appreciate the sentiment, though.

Pours with a black body topped by a thin, brown head wtih a little lacing. It’s sweet and full of vanilla and bourbon notes as well as a slight hint of roast. The bourbon notes are overpowering and take away from the stout flavor istead of complimenting it. Full bodied, smooth and warming.

Makes a quiet entrance. Pours a small brown head that falls as quickly as it appeared. Satin black brew. Whisky up front in the nose with light roast and vanilla notes. Full body, large. Sweet malts, whisky, chocolate, licorice, lightly smokey and raisiny. An almost dry finish, warm, chocolatey, roastesque. A little rough around the edges but thats OK. Thanks Tom!

Tasted at Delilah’s in Chicago on tap. The tap handle indicated it was a 2000 vintage. Sampled in October of 2004. Forgive me if the atmosphere at Delilah’s prevented the recording of some of the subtler nuances of this but rest assured I have a good handle on it. Poured by the bartender with very little head but what was there lasted for the duration of the beer’s existence outside of my stomaches. The color is simply black. Nose is rather intense and vinous with some boozy notes. Flavor is similarly rich in flavor with loads or roasted goodness, a slight sweetness and warming alcohol presence. Certainly a tasty treat and one I’d like to sample again under more ideal note-taking circumstances.

Thanks to Jokes for sending me this beer. Very good stout. Bourbon was just the right amount mixing with the rast flavor.
