Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Probably my favorite annual offering. Had a mini vertical 2007-2008. Both were different but extremely delicious. Perfection in a glass. Dark chocolate, caramel with wrapped in a beautiful robe of bourbon. A truly inspired beer...Also recently had the Blueberry Bourbon County Stout at the brewpub...Mind expanding!

Bottled. Thanks to Magnus Ahlström. Pitch black colour. Very low foam. Really intense and full aroma, there is a blanket of syrup, vanilla, bourbon in aroma, and underneath a accompanying root cellary touch, that seem perfect. The beer flavour itself is a bit on the sweet side, but oh what flavours we have here: vanilla, tar, wood, higher alcohols, darker malts, bourbon. It’s sweet and syrupy but damn tasty.

Rating 1400, on tap at Pacific Standard and since I have bottles of this at home from trades and my own purchases, I figured it was about time I actually drank some of this. Pours a deep dense dark black with a thin to medium sized deep tan head. Large bourbon and vanilla, chocolate, malt. Viscous and thick, lots of plums and prunes, large caramel and chocolate. The booze is well hidden until the finish when it starts creeping up slowly, gently warming with long bourbon, wood, and vanilla notes on top of the rich chocolate.

This kicks ass. Serious dark pour like used motor oil. This beer has no time in its busy schedule to generate a head...it is getting ready to assault your senses. Toasty, roasty battles with the wood and bourbon. If you don’t have any of this, go get it. If you do have some, go get more. I am...

Bottle. Good way to end the semester. Pours pitch black with only a slight wisp of of a chocolaty brown head (killed by the alcohol). Aroma is like a grill, smokey and charred, with the sweetness of chocolate and maple. Taste is incredibly strong with dark chocolate and orange, smoke overtones, and a nice woodiness. Alchohol is fairly apparent. Finishes like a syrup it’s so viscous, with a some sourness. Overall, it’s almost overwhelming; either open it at noon so you can finish by 8:00 or share it with about six friends. Still, a great and grand beer.

(vintage 2006) Pours a deep, thick black with a very thin brown head that dissipated quickly. Aroma thick of bourbon with a hint of chocolate, toffee, toasted malts, a hint of coffee, and bitter-sweet. Tastes heavy of bourbon with some hints of caramel, coffee, chocolate, and a bitter-sweet alcohol finish. Very tasty!

Smells of bourbon and toasty with a bit of chocolate. The bourbon taste in this brew is HUGE and I love it. This is far and away one of the best stouts I’ve ever had. I’m not huge on stouts, but this is one I would pick up again.

Bottle courtesy of furley of internet-fame. Thanks! Pours a pitch black with brown head. Smell is strong vanilla and oak. Tends to cool down a bit as it warms. Very deep taste. Bourbon flavor is apparent, as well as a very smoky wood taste. Very good, but I can’t drink a ton of em.

2009 Bottle. Poured black with a dark wooden brown head. Aroma was full of bourbon notes with sweet caramel and a bit of nuttiness lying underneath. Flavor began with caramel and sweet roasted malt and a bourbon flavor grows into the finish. Very thick on the tongue.
