COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that its a great cigar beer, but I havent yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Editors Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences seperates the beers. Its essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

Pours a dark black with no head or lacing. Aroma of bourbon and vanilla, caramel. I don’t normally mention palate but this one is smooth and thick, very nice! Tastes of bourbon, caramel, vanilla creme brûlée. A really nice winter brew! Supposedly very hard to find. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"I love the style. The bar was set high. This one is great, but not the best. Not a ton of balance here, not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but the bourbon with a side of stout was ALMOSTa little too sticky sweet by the end. i would have given it an even higher grade if Id split a bottle. Score upped a tenth upon multiple revisits :)"

A great job by Goose Island. This 2013 bottle did not disappoint at all. It had a smooth bourbon aroma and flavor that never overpowered the underlying beer. Wow, nice job guys, can't wait to have another one! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle served in a snifter glass. 2012 Edition. Bottled in 23.08.2012. Thanks to stevedore for bringing this one from US! A: Pours an absolutely black color forming a minimal beige to brown head (and Ive poured quite aggressively :)). Minimal retention and no lacings left S: Absolutely delicious in the nose. Strong notes of oak and bourbon. Sweet candy. Vanilla and chocolate notes. Roasted malts. A bit booze T: Sweet upfront followed by a roasted bitterness. Strong notes of oak, coffee, dark chocolate and bourbon. Licorice. Extremely creamy and molasses. Impressive. Good bitterness caused by roasted malts, mainly. Perfect taste M: Heavy body. Extremely creamy and smooth: Impressive. Low carbonation. The thickest beer Ive ever tried. Perfect body. Bittersweet aftertaste O: Perfect drinkability. One of the best Imperial Stouts ever! Transfer from BA review on 1-3-14- 2013 vintage poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance The beer pours an almost pitch black color with a tiny brown colored head. The head fades almost instantly leaving a trace level of lace on the sides of the glass. Upon swirling the brew in the glass, its thickness could be seen, with fingers of the beer clinging to the sides of the glass and slowly receding to the bottom of the glass to its resting place. Smell The aroma of the beer is massive of sweet smells with caramel, molasses, dark fruits of raisin, plum and cherry, as well as a little bit of vanilla all there. Along with these smells are lots of darker aromas of chocolate and roasted malt smells as well as some other lighter aromas of coffee. Rounding out all these smells, and as the name would suggest, a huge bourbon smell as well as a nice woody aroma mix with the rest of the smells, producing a delicious, very dark, sweet and warming aroma overall. Taste The taste begins with a big roasted malt flavor along with sweeter flavors of molasses and darker fruits of raisin and prune. Right from the start, there is also a big bourbon flavor. The bourbon flavor is big and smooth tasting with lots of oaky and woody flavors mixed within. The bourbon gets even richer as the taste advances, bringing with it just a hint of bitterness as more woodsy flavors and a bit of coffee come to the tongue. Along with these increases in the boozy tastes, other sweeter flavors of vanilla and a bit of chocolate come to the tongue more toward the end complementing the other flavors nicely. In the end, with all the nice roasted, sweet, and bourbon flavors of the brew, a very pleasant and still very smooth, yet somehow very warming taste is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel The body of the beer is super thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The thick and creamy body are most fantastic for the darker and heavy boozy and sweet flavors of the brew, with the lower carbonation only enhancing these flavors even more. With the lower carbonation and super thick body, all the fantastic flavors really get to sit and coat the mouth allowing the taste buds to be bathed in all the delicious flavors and soothing the mouth with a fantastic feel. Overall This is a super flavorful, yet massively smooth and balanced stout with an amazing blend of bourbon, sweet, and roast flavor. A sipping stout like no other, and up at the top of my list. Oh so delicious and enjoyable.

A thin-head-pour. Seems very oily... and indeed; this follows up during tasting. Caramel malts, licorice and an intense alcohol burn in the nose. At first monotonous but enriching after a few smells and sips. Very delicate but poignant taste character, perfectly enriched by the intertwining of the alcohol fume - breathtaking in a literal sense, almost takes a mans oxygen away. Taste is slightly sticky in aftertaste, I detect some oak and a bitterness in the background. An oily stout from the malt extracts and barrel aging. Everything in this beer feels like being offered with moderation and balance, but still poignant in its simplicity. Lovely stout, really, but over-priced in Belgium (13EUR).. Hype is a dangerous thing. Although, with the correct aging time an excellent experience well worth it.

Really nice black thick viscous malty beer with some plum, molasses. Not that bitter, no head at all, but really nice!

2013 bottle. Pours black, with a medium, brown, bubbly head. Strong coffee and milk chocolate aroma, peanut butter (?), molasses, oak, vanilla, and a hint of green pepper. Very sweet, light bitterness, but not really burnt or roasted. A little spicy. Very heavy and thick, creamy, with an acidic, pleasantly biting feel in the finish. This is immense, but surprisingly approachable and smooth. Really delicious and well-balanced.

tap from cafe nadery in new york. 2013 (14.9% ) most likely as per their menu. smell of bourbon, caramel, some chocolate, alcohol, malts to an extent poured deep black, no hint of light with a deep brown dissapating head. flavor is like the head, extreme bourbon backing with heavy caramel and a bit of chocolate. good thing i like bourbon so much. definite taste of alcohol but is to be expected with the alcohol content. it got more drinkable as it warmed as the bourbon flavor lessened a bit. not for bourbon dislikers, but then again, for the percentage and the name, i wouldnt expect anything different. id drink this again in the winter.
