At Goose Island our brewers take every opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and aging techniques. For this edition of Bourbon County Brand Stout, they aged the classic recipe in rye whiskey barrels with raspberries and blackberries from Michigan. The result is a powerfully rich beer with notes of tart fruit and jam that fade into the warm spice of a fine rye whiskey.

Bottleshare thanks DexterCat. Nose of candi like fruitiness. Pitch black no head. A little boozey vanilla. But really. The fruit is way sweet and cloying. Ugh. Not bad. Just not my thing.

I got this for DexterCate for an early birthday present. Pours a deep darkish black color with no head. Big berry, black raspberry aroma, followed by typical bourbon county booziness. Tons of berry character, fairly artificial, surprising how much is still there after a few years. Boozy, malty, caramel, chocolate malt after. Pretty tasty.

Bottle share thanks to dexter the cate. Pours black, no head. Sweet aroma, berries, some bourbon. Taste is very sweet, strong berry, even after 2 and a half years. Really sweet. Thought I would like it more. Taste like candy, beer, and chocolate, but not awesome.

Tried at Hunahpu Day in Tampa. Pours a virtual black that is completely opaque. Mild tan head that lingered for 30 seconds. No real lacing. Aroma is raspberry and blackberry like grandma’s cobblers. Damn I miss those! Also some booze and other fruits on the nose but the berries are dominant. The taste is the same with the blackberries and raspberries the main entree. Booze does not come through too bad at almost 13%. Also not overly sweet. Full body, mild carbonation. Guess what...a berry finish. Such a damn good beer.

Thank the heavens InBev hasn’t screwed with this offering. It’s deep and rich, complex is an understatement, lots going on in the aroma and flavor. A FANTASTIC RIS.

Bottle: Mostly full-out black, only a little bit of deep crimson-ruby tinting the edges; the slow forming, tan head fades pretty quickly but is easily brought back nice & creamy with a little swirl of the glass. Lovely aroma... this is how you do a raspberry stout! Very jammy, raspberry, blackberry, maybe even hints of blueberry & black cherry. Large fruit essence evoked inside of a huge, fudge cake & bourbon background. Oak, scorched malt, light vanilla, bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar, & fruit, fruit, fruit! Taste is the same way, a lovely berry flavor right out of the gate. Raspberry jam & purée all over the walls... Very mild tartness that leads into a fruit-based sweetness melding with a molten river of fudge, bourbon, wood, vanilla, sticky burnt brown sugar, timid roast, & mild cola. Long lasting, sweet bourbon, berry, & chocolate finish. Decadent, like a super-rich chocolate cake dessert covered in all sorts of berry compote & drizzled with a vanilla-bourbon sauce. Just delicious, what an amazing stout this has become.

Dark beer with almost no head. Great nose of berries, whiskey and molasses. This is a big, rich beer. Whiskey, black raspberry, oak, molasses, jam, toffee, and vanilla flavors all well balanced. Nice variant of the base beer.
