At Goose Island our brewers take every opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and aging techniques. For this edition of Bourbon County Brand Stout, they aged the classic recipe in rye whiskey barrels with raspberries and blackberries from Michigan. The result is a powerfully rich beer with notes of tart fruit and jam that fade into the warm spice of a fine rye whiskey.

Bomber at a bottle share. Pours black with a very small tan head. Aroma of fruit, roast, bourbon, and chocolate. Taste is dark berries, roasted malt, bourbon, chocolate, and wood. Very, very good.

Dark beer with almost no head. Great nose of berries, whiskey and molasses. This is a big, rich beer. Whiskey, black raspberry, oak, molasses, jam, toffee, and vanilla flavors all well balanced. Nice variant of the base beer.

Pours a deep rich burnt umber color with a finger of dark khaki foam. The nose is boozy chocolate, ripe berry and round bourbon sweetness. The palate follows the nose nicely with a creamy raspberry liquor mid palate that is layered with deep rich chocolate brownie, dark bakers chocolate, some nutty bourbon character and ripe berry notes that lends a touch of acidity late palate that balances the deep roasty bitterness on the finish. Really well put together and focused !

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of raspberry jam with light roasted malt with quite a bit more residual sugar than I was expecting. Taste is a wonderful mix between a sweet imperial stout based with light roasted malt notes and some raspberry and blackberry jam. All the flavours mix in very well and nothing was off-balance. Body is full with light creamy texture and medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable with barrel notes not as discernible as in the regular version.

The most drinkable of the BCBS I had in 2013, this has a wonderful fruit nose and tastes like a blend of BCBS and maraschino cherries.

Bottled 12/10/11, but maybe they all are. From trade with tstockstrom, cheers! Black with a small brown head. Aroma: lots of blackberries and raspberries, licorice, dark wine gums, chocolate. Taste: raspberries, blackberries, violet candies, licorice, creamy chocolate, oak, toffee. Full-bodied. Quite different compared to the other Bourbon Counties I’ve had, but definitely a great one.

22 oz. bottle. Rating from notes. Pours a rich, massive, thick black with a small brown head. Aroma of strong bourbon barrel and flirty berries. Big fruity component, cocoa and dark chocolate, some barrel notes and booze. Delicious booze. Chocolate covered fruit. Sweet, boozy, some sugar, but the berries are upfront, as well as some umami, imparted from the rye. Big and huge on the palate, but not as dominating as other variants, Huge, lush mouthfeel. Finishes with lingering bourbon and chocolate notes. Nice.

Opened at the end of year Ottawa tasting - thanks Boutip. Bottle. Dark brown with a thin brown head. Initial aroma is toffee and then a bucket load of fruit - definitely blackberries, the tartness of some raspberries, seems like more fruit as well - vanilla, bourbon, oak, and as best described by someone else essentially its black forrest cake. Now unfortunately that is not really a cake that I like - and on the palate it seems like a watered down version of BCBS with a bunch of fruit added - more moderate then full bodied with mild carbonation, becomes more thin on the finish and quite sweet. In my opinion not even close to what I would have hoped for...but to each their own :)

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, complex mix of chocolate and pungent coffee resins, light sulfur, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with berries, coffee grind, floral resinous hops, loads of alcohol, very rich. Xmas Ottawa gathering Dec 13 2013.
