3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark color, identical to the glass of Pepsi that sat next to it. Sweet chocolate syrup aroma, with a bit of hay or dried grass mixed in. The taste was malty sweet, the middle was a bit creamy and the hop and alcohol finished it up nicely. I’ve had these put away since December ’01 and bottle conditioned, they stayed super fresh!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 8, 2003 Clear copper-dark amber color, has a nice thick off white head that leaves sheets of lace in my glass. Light caremel and flowery aroma. Sweet caremel flavor balanced with a healthy dose of citrusy, piney hop flavors. Medium body and mouthfeel, a decent winter brew.
Had this a couple years ago and it had a smokey flavor was not that good. This years brew is a lot better.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice red color and full but diminishing head. Strong hop/spice aroma. Nice blend of hop and spice and a nice mildly bitter finish.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice malt/hops balance, bready aroma. Rich brown color carries through to roasty caramel flavors, a hint of burnt taste, a good deal of bitterness at the dry finish. There seems to be some spicing but I can’t make out any specific flavors. I prefer a little more pronounced sweet/spice in a dark Xmas brew but still good.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(’01 vintage) Nothing special here but a sold winter ale. Spicy with a nice malt backbone and just a bit of an alcohol prescence. Not going to win any awards but a quality brew.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This unique winter beer made me very happy. Complex flavor that works with a nice color and aroma. Pick it up some time.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark garnet color with a nice thick rocky head that really lasts. Complex aroma mainly hoppy/piney but complemented with chocolate and caramel tones. Flavor is very fresh with piney and citric hop flavors. Malts are only slightly underdone for style but this remains a nice and unusually well-hopped dark ale. Goose Island: one of the most under-rated American breweries.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 17, 2007 Red, vienna malt appearance. Quickly dissipating foam. Spicey nose from what I would guess is chinook hops. Very similar to Boulevard’s Nutcracker Ale but not as complex or rich.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Light for Xmas Ale, sweet and smooth with a little chocolate, but a definite bitterness. Finish is dry and coffee-like, not dissimilar to a stout, but short-lived.

Now this is a damn great beer. Had a few of these in Chicago while visiting friends. Rich flavor with a hearty after taste that leaves you with a craving for the next sip.
