Flight pour on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Missed this one at FoBAB too. Pours a murky amber brown pour, darker, no glow, almost like muddy water. A small frothy offwhite head sits atop, small ring, laces small. Aromas are a good dose of barrel, Bourbon spirit, heat, and vanilla. Caramel, gentle sweetness grows with toffee, biscuits, more barrel, heat. A gentle kiss of dry earthy hops, faint citrus, but the barrel has taken over this once IPA. Initial is medium bodied, offering a healthy display of barrel up front. Bourbon, vanilla, spirit hump the palate into submission up front. Gentle heat, sweet sticky malts mix with the vanilla barrel tannins. More barrel, toffee, biscuits, pale malts. Coats the palate. Middle shows some jabs of hops, citrusy and floral, gentle earth mix with the barrel, play well, as it doesn’t get too hot. Finish is lingering spirit, sticky malts, and gentle dry and citrusy hops. Body lightens up a bit into the back, the load of barrel getting a bit lighter and hops giving some elements and interest. Still quite barreled, decent body, but the barrel and sticky sweetness take over and overrun up front. Ok, but not necessarily my thing. The hops are decent, add a touch of contrast, but the barrel ends up too strong here. Oxidation, just an ugly pour. A display of a good barrel though, if I’ve ever seen one.

Aroma is vanilla, oak & bourbon. Creamy mouth for the style. Some vanilla in flavor. Long bourbon finish. Nice bitterness. The hops really balanced nicely with the bourbon. This is pretty complex. I liked this one. I’ve never had a pale aged in a bourbon barrel. Very unique.

Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured a deep amber with an off-whtie head that remained throughout the beer. Aroma had a good amount of sweet grains with some spice, a hint of hop and bourbon. Flavor had more bitterness with pine and had a backing bourbon note. Aroma was a bit disappointing.

A cognac amber ale with a very thin off white head. In aroma, a smooth caramel malt with vinous notes, light Bourbon notes, nice. In mouth, a smooth Belgian strong ale (didn’t know it was an IPA though) with curacao and coriander, warming alcohol, very nice. On tap at FoBAB 2011.

Draft at FoBAB 9. I do have to ask, why? I don’t get IPAs in Bourbon barrels. Whatever. Pours a hazy deep gold with a nice fluffy head. The nose is honey, some citrus and a bunch of oaky notes. Vanilla. On tasting, it has a pleasant bitterness, minimal astringency and a rounded malt character tending towards bread and crackers. Meh, okay.
