3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - DEC 22, 2011
Flight on tap at the Clybourn brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich blackish opaque pour, dark and ominous with a bigger light brown cakey head, decent lacing and sticks around well. Aromas are gentle coconut and toastiness, some cocoa, vanilla, and toffee. Gentle roast, with coconut milk and shavings coming into focus. Cakey quality. Initial is medium bodied, offering touches of dryness and toast up front, moving quickly into the shaved coconut presence. Some more cocoa, toast, and toffee. Biscuits and a lovely melange of flavors, a bit more full on the palate than expected. Now, I’m not a big coconut fan, so of course, it’s not my bag of tricks from the get go. Finish throws more vanilla, some toast and roast, lingering cocoa and a good solid dose of coconut. Not bad. Firm mouthfeel, good flavors if you love coconut. Overall it’s solid.

Draft at clybourn, pours dark reddish brown with tan head. Sweet aroma with milk chocolate, lactose, mild coconut. Flavors are really sweet milk chocolate, some toasted coconut but it’s really mild, long sweet raisiny Flavors. Thin body with prickly carbonation. No dark chocolate, mild coconut, and very sweet base. Meh.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pantanap (2838) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 20, 2011
On tap at gi clybourn... Pours a murky dark cola, more reddish towards the edges, and topped with a thin creamy light beige head that sticks around for the vast duration of the sample... Aroma is cocoa and lighter sense of toasted coconut and roast. Pretty similar to the base which is porter and proad with just the light coconut as an enhancement... Mildy sweet cocoa presents itself first, can’t say there’s all that much coconut which I was expecting more of although a trace is very subtlely noticeable but it’s somewhat reaching. Finishes on a sweeter side with some dark fruits come through late. Soft creamy mouthfeel to go with a lighter level of carbonation. A slight improvement on the base but not by very much.
