English Mild Rye Ale with Blood Oranges Added

A French term meaning “In Passing,” En Passant is also a maneuver in the game of chess; in any given game there is but one opportunity to execute an En Passant before the chance is lost. Joel, Keith, and Claudia chose this name as a reminder to savor this limited release before the chance slips away.

A nod to the Old Fashioned cocktail, En Passant is a mild ale brewed with two types of rye and sharply aromatic Columbus hops. The beer undergoes a secondary fermentation with Blood Orange Juice and Blood Orange Peel, giving En Passant assertive citrus notes and an appealing vermillion hue. Enjoy En Passant by itself or paired with a fine bourbon.

On tap at Revolution Brewery, Chicago. Pours Carmel colored with a orange hue, quickly dissipating head. Very cloudy and unfiltered Smell has lots of spicy citrus notes and a little hint of wood. A little bit of Esthers in the smell and taste of this that seemed a little off. Overall great beer, and def. matches the description of an Old Fashioned cocktail in beer form. I'd much rather have an Old Fashioned or glass of Rye Whiskey over this, though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Poured cloudy medium amber with no head. The aroma picked up sweet, fresh blood oranges and floral notes.. quite nice. The flavor found pale and light caramel malts at the core, with fresh blood orange juice and light clovey notes around.. refreshing tart orange on the finish. Lighter-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. good balance.. very tasty brew!

Draft at GTMW 12. Finally had a chance to try this one. Pours a deep reddish brown with a fluffy head. The nose is earthy and grainy, faint citrus. Some light floral esters come through as well. On tasting, it is light bodied, a bit too fizzy as well. Full and grainy, the rye comes through nicely. The citrus, again, is held back though does kind of soften the palate overall. Clean and fresh and very likable.

Tap at Madison’s. Murky brown body with no head. Nice blood orange aroma and flavor but pretty balanced. Palate is clean and easy drinking.

Smell is barely detectable. Light citrus at best. Pour is amber with no head. Taste some citrus and sour but a thick, pulp less mild orange juice with some age. Would be a nice compliment to a brunch or on a hot day. Aftertaste is bitter and dry on the palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2015 At Rockwells. Interesting beer. The malt and rye mellow the sweetness of the blood orange which could have been overwhelming. Not sure I’d want a 6pack but interesting for a glass or two. Serving: Tap

On tap at Lillie Q’s. Pours a near clear deep orange with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a hint of citrus up front but is full of grain with a hint of rye. Flavor begins with sweet grains and blood orange but has a bit of rue int the finish.

Guest tap at the Hay Market. I could not refuse something with blood oranges and it served me right, making it oh so drinkable.. An enjoyable sourness.

Draft. Pours a deep golden color with a small white head. Aroma is sweet graham cracker and a bit crisp with notes of rye bread and sharp citrus. Flavor is odd, some sweet citric notes, a sharp rye character. A bitter note jumps in quickly with the bread, something is definitely strange about the flavor, cant put my finger on it. Medium body and a soft carbonation.
