I get a lot of fruit and spices in the nose. Caramel and vanilla, taste is similar loads of spice and caramel. Really nice, the alcohol is still pretty strong in this one though. Reminds me a barleywine given the sweetness.

A: Very dark; nearly opaque through a 5 oz. tasting glass. Light brown sugar head with moderate retention. S: Sugary sweetness with residual fruit esters. The malt comes through under the fruits. Faint hop aroma. T: Quite sweet with the alcohol hitting the back of the throat. Hints of black licorice; greater presence of dark fruits and at least a little black cherry. Definite bite of alcohol. M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Crispness on the tip of the tongue and a slight tingle on the way down. D: Can’t get enough--hard to stop and write between sips. My favorite offering from Goose Island yet. Other Notes: Had at the Wrigleyville location on 02.28.09. The menu there calls the beer "Extra Naughty Goose." From the menu: "A brown ale with a bite. An American interpretation of an English classic, with lots of domestic Tettnang and Cascade hops to complement the choclaty roasted malt character. Served in a tulip for $7.

Tap @ Pracna (Minneapolis) during the holiday season 2009. Awesome beer! Dark brown pour, vanilla aroma pours out of the glass. Taste is creamy, vanilla, dark fruit, with an alcohol presence. Fantastic.

Gosh, I liked this--possibly the best beer of the 2009 Holiday season? Gorgeous aroma with raisins and a very floral bouquet. Vanilla and some alcohol, as a testament to the aging. Good, rounding flavors, luscious and warming. On tap at The Happy Gnome, St. Paul.

Cask at Clybourn. Poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. The head was thick, light tan, and creamy. Big malty aroma with plenty of diacetyl; caramel, vanilla, butter. Medium to full bodied, boozy, and slightly sweet. Very little carbonation from the cask. The flavor, like the aroma, was malt dominated. I tasted buttery caramel, toffee, alcohol, and a hint of coffee. Not bad, but not as good as I had hoped.

Near brown color with a hint of cherry color when swirled in the glass. Heavy malt aromas with a mild fruit, especially berry background. It think I read that this had been aged on cranberries. Flavor start sweet with caramel and toffee, a slight blending of the fruit in the middle and a touch of spice in the finish and into the linger with just a bit of alcohol. Slightly warming. A nice winter warmer.

Sampled at FoBAB 09. Yeah, I was feeling naughty. Dark pour with little tan head. Bourbony sweet aroma. A bit too sweet of flavor. Caramel and toffee, and enough fruit to make me wonder whether there was actually fruit in this. Pretty cool for a big beer.

FoBAB. Pour is black with thin tan head. Aroma is fruity, sweet, boozy, bourbon, and light acidity. Flavor is really much sweeter and fruitier than expected. The coffee and woodiness try to balance the sweetness, but overall the berry flavor dominates. It’s interesting, but I think the berry flavor overwhelmed me.

I had this right after the Night Stalker, and while I thought it to be good, Night Stalker was a very tough act to follow. This beer struck as me being similar, but lighter and with significantly less hoppiness. It pours black, with decent head. Aroma was dark and roasty with a good amount of chocolate and nuttiness. Seemed more reminiscent of a Porter to me than anything else. Flavor was really rather sweet and offered more roastiness, but again, seemed mild following the Night Stalker. Mouthfeel was pretty light. Not bad. I had this on-tap at the brewery.

Had on tap at Clybourn. Big malty sweet with a grainy touch and a hint of alcohol. Finishes roasty.
