3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - OCT 20, 2012Enjoyed on tap at GI Clybourn, served in a snifter.
A: Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights where the light hits. A tan head forms on the pour and recedes to a thin ring that leaves some soapy lace.
S: Chocolate malt with a light roasted malt background and a nice hint of sweet booze.
T: Big candied sugar sweetness with a nice mix of booze and chocolate malts. Nice roasted undertones with a little touch of honey and fruit. Nice toffee and nutty combination really round out a balanced taste.
M: Medium bodied with a pretty full mouthfeel. Nice medium carbonation level with a little sweet kick to it.
O: Very good. A little boozy and sweet, but it’s really good and I really liked it.

Sampled from the tap at the Clyborn. Pours a clear deep ruby with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges slowly. Aroma has a combo of sweet and earthy grains with a bit of booze and honey. Flavor has a bit of light fruit and sweet grains with a bread note coming out in the finish.

Wonderful beer. Pours an almost black brown with some amber hues. Mild tan head that fades to lace. Raisin and ripe apricot aroma. Roasty raisin sweet flavors with a coffee bitter finish. Full bodied and creamy.

Thick brown appearance with a nice light brown head. A sweet, desert beer. Toffee, chocolate, and brown sugar. Nothing overwhelming and fairly well-balanced, but not something I would drink two in a row of... Tried with Nick and his friend in Chicago in 2012.

On tap @ Goose Island Clybourn with Erica on 10.18.2012. In town for Jen’s and Mark’s engagement party. Dark brown color. Malty aroma with some nuttiness to it. Tastes a little sweeter than it smells with notes of caramel, booze, nuts, spice, sugarcane. Wasn’t that naughty but I liked it.

On tap at GI Clybourn. Pours a deep brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is spiced nuts, dark fruit esters, honey, sweet caramel, toffee, and touches of roast. Flavor is better. Fairly sweet caramel and some chocolate up front with a spiced nuttiness, earth, light roasts, toffee, and some dark fruit esters. Finishes with a spiced caramel sweetness that dries cleanly with a light roasty and earthy bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, full body and a soft, creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty big brown, but well balanced and no real hints of alcohol. The aroma wasn’t really doing it for me, but the flavor was solid.

I get a lot of fruit and spices in the nose. Caramel and vanilla, taste is similar loads of spice and caramel. Really nice, the alcohol is still pretty strong in this one though. Reminds me a barleywine given the sweetness.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2012 A: Very dark; nearly opaque through a 5 oz. tasting glass. Light brown sugar head with moderate retention.
S: Sugary sweetness with residual fruit esters. The malt comes through under the fruits. Faint hop aroma.
T: Quite sweet with the alcohol hitting the back of the throat. Hints of black licorice; greater presence of dark fruits and at least a little black cherry. Definite bite of alcohol.
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Crispness on the tip of the tongue and a slight tingle on the way down.
D: Can’t get enough--hard to stop and write between sips. My
favorite offering from Goose Island yet.
Other Notes: Had at the Wrigleyville location on 02.28.09. The menu there calls the beer "Extra Naughty Goose."
From the menu: "A brown ale with a bite. An American interpretation of an English classic, with lots of domestic Tettnang and Cascade hops to complement the choclaty roasted malt character. Served in a tulip for $7.
