GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Apr 29, 2007 12 oz bottle. 2006 vintage. Poured a clear orange color. Head was thick and white, but settled quickly into a thin film. Aroma was of perfumy alcohol and citrusy hops. There was also a touch of toffee. Delicately sweet on the tongue with mild hop bitterness. Fruity and syrupy with peach and caramel flavors not unlike FFF Dreadnaught IIPA. Good IIPA. zathrus13 (1288), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Apr 27, 2007 Pours a cloudy deep gold, with a white head. Aroma is citrusy hops, sugar, and malt. Flavor is citrus, sugar, alcohol, and malt. Highly enjoyable. Thanks to
The Epeeist for this one. reakt (938), Greater London, England Apr 26, 2007 Updated: Sep 1, 2007bottle @ uto. Thanks to Michael for suggesting this one. Copper with a thin head. Lovely enticing aroma of orange, hops, malt and toffee. Super hop taste with citrus and malts. Finish of light spiced orange / pumpkin. Light bitterness. Well balanced. Really good. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Apr 23, 2007 Looks and smells great. Cloudy orange in color. Taste has a pleasantly incredible amount of bite. No backing down at any point. No real fruitiness, just intense and satisfying bitterness. hoppymeal (38), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA Apr 21, 2007 Pours a fire colored orange and leaves some lacing as it is consumed. The smell is extremely enticing grapefruit and citrus, maybe a little piney but mostly grapefruit. The taste is also citrusy bitterness but it is well balanced by a large malt backbone. A little like eating a grapefruit and chewing on the membranes that divides them into sections which I quite enjoy. A fairly good size body on this one due to the large malt presence. Very nice how Goose Island has printed the recommmended glassware on the bottle. The bottle also indicates that the flavor will develop for five years and while there are not many dipa’s I like to cellar I may have to hold one of these back to see. With all the malts and the strong alcohol content who knows. This beer is an extremely well balanced dipa, I can’t wait to try some of GI’s other big beers.
smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Apr 11, 2007 pours golden with small off-white head. aroma is a potent sweet pineapple hops. taste is a very sweet citric hop (mostly oranges and grapefruit). finish is bitter and dry with some residual sweetness. very good even if it wasnt the freshest example(which was taken into account). quite a bit alike dfh 90. thornecb (1737), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Apr 11, 2007 Pours bright amber into a shaker. Offwhite micro head slowly recedes. Pine and sweet grapefruit aromas. Spicy and smooth with very good balance. Lasting hop finish. awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA Apr 10, 2007 From a 12oz Bottle, 2006 Vintage. First of all, I realize I might be committing a cardinal sin by rating this beer, but I’m doing it anyway because its damn satisfying, especially the aroma. Besides, the bottle says drink by March 31st, and I put it in my fridge before then with the honest intention of drinking it before then, but never got around to it. That counts for something, right? Pours a hazy orangish golden color with a thin layer of white head. A light ruddy hue adds some tasteful colors that remind me of ripened mango skins. Big, sweet-like aroma that has some intense sugary fruit characters. I usually don’t go for the IIPA’s that stray from the bone-dry example, but this one smells delicious. Big aroma of confectioner’s sugar dusted on top of fresh summer watermelon, papaya, and peaches. Sweet blood orange pulp and some soft red grapefruit add a desired amount of citrus character to balance. Full bodied, mildly carbonated mouthfeel with a soft texture. Lots of heavy malts, but not to the point of being cloying. Some sweetened caramel and mango flesh form a chewy base thats pleasant, but not as overwhelming as the bouquet. Moderate hop bitterness, mostly coming across as white grapefruit, with a pleasant lingering herbal smack. Alcohol very well concealed.
