Commercial Description:
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with white head. The aroma is, as expected, intense hops, mostly Simcoe. There are also wafts of fresh peaches, very smooth and pleasant. This is a GREAT smelling beer. Ok, away from the nose and into the mouth. Wow, for something this bitter, it sure is smooth. There is a lot of hop flavor as well as straightforward bitterness, and a malty sweetness that is just the right level. The peach tones are more subdued than in the nose, but they are there, with some zest mingling in, too. There is a distinct, bright earthy finish with an odd savory touch to it. This is fine drinkin’ indeed.

Thanks so much Ariane and Lo!!! Orange color with a small white head on top. Nice intense hops nose. Medium hops taste, gritty, a bit sweet and a little light body. Still quaffable!

Orange pour with a very thin white head. Some lacing on the glass is pretty. The aroma is huge and attractive. The scent is fresh and sharp. THe flavor is pretty harsh with bitterness. The palate is sufficiently big with some raspiness in the finish. A nice big IPA but I was looking for a bit more malt. Not a critisism, but not what I was looking for in this selection.

Bonus bottle from OhioDad ! Poured a small light tan sticky head, excellent retention with an attractive lace that that just wont quit. Hazy orange/copper hued brew. Punchy nose, spicey, fruity, capped with citrus and melon notes that are fresh. Body is med/full, lightly resiny. Hop blast opens on the pallet with a large fruity, spicey and flowery combo, medium sweet malts, lightly bready, toasty and a touch grainy. Fruity, hoppy finish, greedy hop bite. Thanks for the ride Scott! Garoooovy!

Big fresh hop nose - pugent really. Deep gold color with a slight haze, fluffy head. Think quick orangy citrus malt, powerful hop bitter across the whole mouth. Almost overhopped so that is gets sweet again. Grtty feel. Good, but out of control at times and no so sophisticated as you’d like.

Deep amber body with off-white head, initially mediumsized, quickly fading, nice lacing. The aroma is a pine forest covered in grapefruits with some caramel notes. Flavor is also big with grapefruit juice, resin, solid caramel, biscuit malt backbone. Bitter thoughout, but really comes through on the long finish. Mouthfeel is crewy and sticky. Very nice IIPA.

I’m glad to be able to find this in single bottles, as I won’t pay the $18.99 for a four pack they’re asking. Pretty nice beer, but my example is less hoppy aromawise than I would suspect. It was bottled 4 monthes ago, so I would suspect that it might have been better earlier. Reminds me of Dogfish’s 90 Min IPA back when it was bottled in big bottles. Very hoppy and very bitter. Still, a good beer.

Pours a glowingly clear golden amber with a creamy off-white head the simmers down to a nice haze. Nose is bountiful and citrusy with hops and a bitter alcohol note. Flavor is a slam dance of tastes. At first honey-like and sweet, then piney and resinous, then all out bitter, then a malty kind of sweet with a nice crisp clean finish that lets the hop bitterness settle on the tongue. Top notch!
