Commercial Description:
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

The beer pours a somewhat bemused orange to amber color with the head mountainous in size, frothy in texture and the color a winsome light tan as it slowly fades into the sunset the lace forms a thick and concealing sheet upon the glass. “WOO HOO”, hops, flowery and enticing, sweet malt behind, a real pleasure for the “Hop Heads” nose, start is ambrosial, rich in malt with the top middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is brisk in its carbonation, but as one would expect the hops win the day, pleasing in their robust spiciness, tart and refreshing to the palate, very dry and lingering hop bitter aftertaste, a real treat for this “Old Hop Head”.

Bottle @ Goose Island Clybourne: This was another one that wasn't on the menu that the waitress told me about. This pours with a BIG frothy head. The color is a cloudy orangish one. The hop nose is strong, but not overpoweringly so. Hints of pine and mustiness to the nose. The taste has a citric sourness to it. The hops taste strong, but not overly bitter. Very Good!

Cloudy vibrant amber colour. Big fresh grassy, citrusy, slightly woody hop nose. Well-rounded flavours, lots of fruity, citrusy hops and clean pale malts. Certainly not one to blow minds, but very well-made and of universal appeal.

Explosively hoppy nose, just buckets of pine resin and juicy citrus, a few deft touches of flowers and earth in the background, also hints of peppery alcohol. Partly cloudy medium orange color, with a creamy, lasting head. Big, hoppy start, citric bitterness and flavor, piney and floral, with a sweet, substantially malty and almost sugary middle, leading to a long, warming, balanced finish. Extremely full-bodied, smooth yet drinkable, very good all-round.

Slightly cloudy yellow, small white head. Grassy hoppy nose, touch of sweetness. Sweet, light malty body with very bitter, lip-smacking hops. Pretty much a standard IIPA, and there's nothing wrong with that!

Bottled 18 days ago. Dark golden to amber color with a moderate head that settles to a small lid and a well latticed lace. A rather typical sweet grapefruit and malt aroma. Don’t get me wrong typical is good in the IIPA department. Some mild flowers and peaches spread about the grapefruit. A thick full feel. All the malt and plenty of hops to back it up. Not overly complex, but what should one expect from something this big. Malt is flavorful throughout the the sip. A nice dry malt linger. Hops are huge, but still seem to balance rather than overpower.

Pours a cloudy golden hue with a fast fading white head and by the time I had a chance to rate it, lacing wasn’t even rateable(if that’s spellt corectly or even a werd). Aroma...... oh man...that aroma....of a good Ipa... Pine and citrus aromas abound that fill my nostrils with delight. Man that is good. Crisp pine ebbs and flows as I sniff ever so gently. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with flavors that match the great aroma. A little soap is thrown in there, but with the pine and finishes smooth. The flavor doesn’t match the aroma as one would think, but this still a top notch double IPA and it is suprising to be from the chicago and not the west coast, despite it’s types of hops.

Big frothy tan head, amber/orange hue. Big nose, grapefruit and citrus dominate with just a hint of caramel. Heavy bitterness, although the caramel sweetness does shine through on the back of the toungue. Very heavy body, typical carbonation for the style. Very bitter and dry finish. Gives you a warm feeling on teh way down.
