CaptainCougar (4664), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jan 22, 2006 On tap at Clybourn 12/16/2005: Very dark brown pour has a thin ring of off-white head. Nice, sweet malty and smokey roasted balanced aroma. Viscous malty sweet and earthy smokey body has nice complexity and a smooth, lightly warming finish. Nice malty presence throughout but is slightly cloying. A nice smoked beer that reminds me of a young Bells Batch 5000. hopscotch (4588), Vero Beach, Florida, USA May 15, 2008 Draft… DLD’08… This beer rocks!… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, beige head. The aroma is of beechwood smoke. There’s some chocolate in there as well, but it’ almost totally eclipsed by that wonderful, wonderful smoke. Full-bodied and velvety with prickly carbonation. Sweet, smoky and chocolaty up front, but moderate bitterness outlasts all else. Smoky, bittersweet, chocolaty finish. Awesome brew! Cornfield (4343), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Nov 21, 2005 Very nice Rauchbier - a dark, dark brown ale with ruby highlights and a pillowy light brown head that rapidly transforms into a halo, it’s got a bacon and sausage aroma interlaced with berries and plums. The caramel comes out in the drink along with the fruits... and the thick smoke, of course. You can taste any of the hefty ABV through the smoke, but the warmth the drink produces lets you know that it’s there. The finish is dry and smokey. Good job, GI! JPDIPSO (4286), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Oct 9, 2008 Dark brown color with a smallish lid of off-white small bubbles. Smoked pale malt scents waft upward. Some hints of fruit and cocoa also mingling. Smooth feel, nearly a rye type slickness. Smoked figs dipped in light caramel come to mind. Some hints of molasses and apple wood. Solid smoked brew. BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA Nov 18, 2005 Updated: Aug 12, 2006Rerate 2006 batch: OIly legs and prickly mouth feel. The flavor displays a lush fruit and smoke combination, even better this time around.
Tap and enjoyed with TAR and Jokes at Clybourn: Deep brown hue with a small ring of frothy head and some lace. The nose detected meaty smoke, grassy and light pine hops, grapefruit, vanilla, and walnut. The taste has a heavy chewy smoked malt flavor with additional undertones of plum and prune. Slightly nutty and caramel midesection. Bitter biting finish with even some peppery notes. The feel is lively, sharp and a bit oily. Dry tobacco like finish. YUMMY, quite a nice smoked beer and little notice of the alcohol hidden within.
