Our IPA recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result, quite simply a hop lover’s dream. And this classic ale adds a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, to ensure that the long hop finish is one you’ll remember.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle at Brixie’s Spring Tasting in Brookfield, IL., with a clear, golden color, modest white foam to the head, and clingy spots and streaks of lacing. The nose was a nice balance of citrus, pine, and malt. The citrus was more as ripe grapefruit in the flavor, along with smooth malt and a moderately strong hop bitterness. A very good style introduction IPA.

Bottle. Pours a 2", white, foamy head. Lasting and lacy. Clear, golden-orange body. Moderate hop aroma dominated by citrusy American hops. Mainly grapefruit and mandarin orange. Flavor contains white grape, pear and the aforementioned citrus. Biscuit and bready malt underneath as well as some cereal. Hops have an almost vegetal quality, but avoid being offensive. Medium body is somewhat sticky and resinous...distracting. Moderate carbonation. Overall a pretty solid beer.

On tap at Sweeney’s in Satin Paul, MN. Pours a clear orange with lots of pale yellow/gold swirling around, too; not much head and little lacing. It seemed too transparent, which, to me, is harbinger for a lack of robust flavor. Aroma is pretty faint -- just some vegetal hops. Carbonation is fine, but this beer is generally boring on the palate. Dominated by grassy, vegetal hops that lack any distinct characteristics. The malt was pretty absent, too, and the balance between bitterness, hoppiness, and sweetness was off. Mediocre, in my opinion.

On tap at the Winking Lizard Crosswoods location. Clear orange pour with a medium off-white head. Nice citrusy and piney hop nose with some sweet malt, but the nose is a bit more faint than I’d like. Grassy hop flavor up front mixed in with some pine and sweet malt before a citrusy hop finish. Great character in the nose and flavor, but could use a bit more of each.

12 oz bottle. Pours a light pale golden with a creamy frothy white head. Aroma is a beautiful bouquet of spicy, piney and citric hops, all melded together perfectly over a sweet toasty caramel malt backbone. Flavor starts sweet and creamy with a nice fresh citric fruit character, the hop resins kick in and add a layer of more earthy and piney hops before a soft bitter finish. Medium creamy body and a soft carbonation. A great hybrid of american and english ipa’s that is very drinkable and refreshing.

Pours deep gold into a shaker. Fluffy white micro head top hats as it recedes to coat surface leaving spot lacing. Orange resin aromas. Crisp with upfront orange pith turning to resin in the lasting finish.

Nice strong taste. Bitter, with a bit of aftertaste. Doesn’t seem to dominate the palate too much. All in all, a hell of a way to start off my 21st birthday!

On tap at GI. Pour is rich copper color with a thin white head. Aroma and flavor are light hoppy (most pine and resin) with a nice balancing maltiness. Solid all around IPA.

Bottle. A - Slightly hazy copper amber with decent sized foamy white head. Decent retention and a fair amount of lace left over. S - Good hop smell, with a good amount of citrus (orange and grapefruit) as well as some floral/herbal smells. Faint caramel malt. T - A lot of varieties of hop flavors are abundant. Citrus (orange and grapefruit), a good amount of herbal/floral tea-like hops. Also a bit pine and pepper. The background has a bread/biscuit and slight caramel malt taste. This provides a base and balances the hops a bit. M - Medium body and decent carbonation. Crisp and fairly smooth. D - Pretty good. Fairly balanced beer with hops being the center of attention. Body pretty good for drinkability. Notes: Pretty balanced hoppy beer. Not an amazing beer, but a good beer for a hop centered beer but not a really bitter or heavily hopped beer.

The look is very clear, a light orange color. Not much head, but lots of carbonation. A little hazy actually. Looks just about right, quite normal. Really nice grapefruity hop smell. That bitter grapefruit becomes sweeter on the longer drag. Smells very bitter and really quite good. The taste is very strong and bitter hops. The malt is nice and bitter, but also dry and biscuity. Very nicely balanced. The yeast is also another good added dimension. Feels thick and also very dry. Has a biscuit/yeast base, but also has a clean finish. It’s well balanced overall. Dry and bitter; bitter in both the hops AND the malt. A good, serviceable IPA.
