Our IPA recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result, quite simply a hop lover’s dream. And this classic ale adds a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, to ensure that the long hop finish is one you’ll remember.

Draught at Stoney’s. Bright golden color, medium white head, massive lacing. Aroma of wet grass and citrus. Taste is plenty hoppy with just a touch of bitterness. Nice balance and character.

Test vom 11.6.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,12,11,11,8,12 - 11,50

It is a warm golden beer with a creamy head. The aroma has notes of mango, citrus, peach, spruce needles and caramel. The flavour has a light sweetness and notes of fruit, mango, citrus, spruce and caramel. It is very well balanced and charmingly uncomplicated.

A: The beer pours a surprisingly hazy orange color with a finger of white head that has pretty poor retention. S: Smells fairly sweet, but mostly of sweet citrus fruit such as orange and perhaps kumquat. Toasted grain and malt with a bit of bread and toffee to go along with it. Some mild grassy and floral hop notes, too. T: Sweet just like the nose. Bread and caramel with some sweet orange and orange peel. Slightly bitter with maybe just a hint of pine. Some more of those floral and slightly earthy hop notes to it. M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation. D: Not what I’m really accustomed to with the American IPA being my weapon of choice for the broader style. Not awful, though.

I’ve been drinking some great IPAs recently and this offering from Goose Island stands of reasonably well. I had it tap at the Waterstone Grill on Stone St. in NYC. A nice light red coloring and a subtle, fine head. Mild aroma of citrus and pine from the hops. Taste reinforced the hop sensation with a slight bitterness and a smooth finish. Aftertaste seemed to be a little off but I’ll bet it was the tap and not the beer per se. Overall a tasty beer and highly drinkable.

Light amber color, frothy head. Strong hops and grapefruit aroma. Blackcurrant. Oily hoppy flavor with blackcurrant and a bit of citrus. Hoppy, oily aftertaste. Very nice beer, big in aroma and taste, but maybe just a bit onedimensional.

Bottled 355ml, from Sainsburys, Banbury. Dark amber with white head. I was prepared to be blown away, but wasn’t, sure there are hops in there, but they lacked some character and the malty sweetness is a bit odd for a true IPA, it masked much of the hop. There is bitterness in the finish with a fruity note, quite like Chinese gooseberries. A reasonable beer without being exceptional.
