Our IPA recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result, quite simply a hop lover’s dream. And this classic ale adds a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, to ensure that the long hop finish is one you’ll remember.

It pours a remarkably light-color, the straw shade of a cream ale. This is a bit strange, as pale ales tend to have caramel malts to provide a bit of sweetness in order to balance the hops, and caramel malts add those rich reddish browns. It is fairly clear but there is certainly a bit of haze. The off-white head is creamy and strong, but not very voluminous. The nose is strongly of Pacific northwest hops: the floral grapefruit and orange character that defines American pale ales. The flavor is at once creamy and sweet yet robust and bitter. Strong hop bitterness leads the way and doesn’t let up, providing a throughline that the rest of the flavor dances around. The hops aren’t content to be a bit(ter) player, though. Herbal, earthy, almost vegetal flavors intermingle with serious grapefruit, mango, and citric hoppiness. Notes of light malt come through: a clean and malty, almost bready, flavor. This contributes a bit of sweetness that is frustratingly evasive. For a moment it almost seems balanced, then the bitterness rears its beautiful head.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 12 ounce bottle. Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a white foamy head. Aroma: Earthy and spicy hop aroma, decent. Taste: Earthy hop bitterness, with a caramel sweetness and malts. Palate: Medium body. Overall: Pretty much the quintessential IPA. Very good representation.

Prima IPA, vol aroma en dito smaak, met alles wel erin wat je verwacht. Passievrucht, citrus, wat overrijp fruit.

Bottle at home. Pours a polished amber colour with a white head that fades quickly. Rich aroma of resin pine and grapefruit. Sweet to start, then lots of balancing bitterness. Rich, sticky palate with rich, chewy grain and fruit. A powerful, bitter beer but not overpowering - a fine IPA.

473 ml can from The Beer Store. Pours a clearish golden orange colour with smallish off-white head. Aroma is earthy and citrusy with some biscuity graininess. Flavour is modest citrusy hops, some caramel maltiness, hints of toasty graininess and earthiness. A little bitterness in the finish. Medium body. Solid - a very nice option to have in the beer wasteland that is the SkyDome (Rogers Centre).

Can. Red body, large beige head. The aroma is hoppy and flowery, very full. The taste is full as well, but crisp at the same time. Pretty nice!
