Multiple samples at GABF. Nice dark brown pour, brown head. Aroma has great medium barrel notes, tahitian vanilla, dr pepper, toffee, plums, chocolate. Flavor is sweet with just enough roast and a nice dose of the sweet bourbon from the barrel. Charred wood and some asphalt. Really good stuff.

Had this at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. Big chocolate and oat scents. Taste is a creamy chocolate with a big roast.

Sampled with Andrew and Moreau at GABF 2012. It was almost unfair to try this after the XOCHOLATE (whatever) beer. It’s essentially a tamer version with most of the same notes (chocolate, bourbon, light vanilla, oak) toned down much more. Lighter body, not as syrupy with some slightly roastier tones coming through. With that being said, I still thought it was excellent and well balanced.

draft... dark brown, almost black but for the edges that are much lighter...I like the nose, good balance of vanilla, bourbon, cream and coffee... taste lets me down big time, the base was way to light for barrel aging, super thin, watered down bourbon, don’t get any oatmeal stout at all

Sampled at GI Cly. A dark black with a thin head. Lots of bourbon in the nose. Coffee chocolate essence and something that’s kind of odd all overpowered by that booze. A good amount of that bourbon in the flavor. The chocolate and malts are overpowered but since I like bourbon I don’t mind. Decent.

December 28, 2011 tap at Clybourn. Opaque black with almost no head. Aroma was bourbon, chocolate and hint of vanilla. Taste was a bit of let down, but similar to aroma. Slight carbonation and medium bodied.

On tap at the Clybourn brewpub. Pours a black body with a thin, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is bourbon and vanilla up front before a nice cocoa and roast comes out. Some fruits, a touch of toasted caramel, and oak with a touch of alcohol heat. Flavor is similar. Bourbon up front with some cocoa and roasts. A light caramel, a good amount of vanilla, fruits, oak, and a bit of a bittersweetness to the cocoas before this finishes fairly dry with a nice chocolate, roast, and light bourbon. Just a bit warming before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Light body and a light carbonation. Overall, not a bad barrel aged stout. Nice balance between bourbon, cocoa, and roasts. A bit thin, but tasty.

Draft at Clybourn. Pours pitch black with a nice tan head. Nose is a blast of fruity bourbon, vanilla and some spicy hop notes. Definitely a bourbony beer on the nose with a sharp alcohol note. On tasting, fruity and quite thin with a sticky booze quality that I’m not huge on. Dry finish, light flavor overall. Not awful but not my bag.

Flight on tap at the Clybourn brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich blackish pour, darker and opaque with a smaller frothy loose ringed head. Laces small. Aromas are toasty and vanilla, a good dose of spirit and Bourbon, wet oak, and roasty malts. Cocoa, caramel, and more vanilla tannins mix with a gentle ABV heat, some coffee. Stronger barrel presence on the nose. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, giving a potent dose of the barrel up front. Bourbon spirit and and cocoa mix with some warming ABV, vanilla, and wet oak. Decent roast and toast lose their edge to the barrel and a stronger cocoa feel. Thinner on the palate, losing sweetness as more earthy smoke and ash, barrel come into the backend. Drying out with some peanuts, ash, more vanilla tannins as the heat fades away. Whatever base is beneath seems eaten up by the barrel. Not making it a bad beer, but making it lose that complexity battle. Not bad, a bit hot and thin at the end of the day running up against other Bourbon barrel aged stouts.

Draft at cly, pours black with no head. Aroma is mostly whiskey, some nice toasted coconut and vanilla while lots of booze comes off even after letting it breathe for 40min. Flavors have whiskey, vanilla, toasted coconut, semi sweet chocolate, and toasted nuts. Lots of booze in the finish. Thin body from the barrel. Not too bad but the barrel is overwhelming this poor guy.
