Barrel Aged Barleywine. 11% ABV, 60 IBUs. Loosely based off our 2000th brew at our production facility,we revived this hybrid American / English Barley Wine for a special treat. Coming out of the tanks we aged it in barrels previously used for Bourbon County Rare Stout (Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year) to add another layer of complexity.

Note: The original release of this beer (2010) was done in regular bourbon barrels. The 2011 and bottle release saw the use of the barrels formerly used for Bourbon County Rare. We are not seperating these as I do not believe the bottles will clarify this. The original release also saw an 11% ABV, with the bottling seeing closer to 13.4%

Bottle. Pours a nice dark caramel amber color with a beige head. Aroma is really complex, lots of oak, bourbon, vanilla, almost stout like qualities of roasted malt and chocolate, some sweet and caramel malt, toffee, charred oak, dark fruits, molasses and brown sugar. The flavor follows the nose and is amazing, lots of oak, bourbon and vanilla, with the stouty notes of roasted and toasted malt and chocolate, some sweet and caramel malt, charred oak, dark fruits, molasses, brown sugar and toffee. The body is full with a sticky mouth feel. Overall an amazing Barley Wine, and probably the best I have had!

Bottle. Pours bit hazy deep amber with a medium beige head. The aroma is heavy malty with notes of ripe fruit, berries, biscuits, bread and sweet toasted caramel. The flavour is oak, vanilla, biscuits, caramel, sweet malt, loads of malt, warming alcoholic and it has a slight acidic malty note that balances it very well.

Bottle, 22oz, at TFODRBSG 2012. An almost clear one, brown in color and almost without any head. Alcohol, roasted malts, some pleasant hoppyness, a touch of vanilla and a dash of chocolate. Quite chocolatey in the flavor, with vanilla, alcohol, roasted malts and a fine bitterness. Too warm on the palate I think, but it’s pleasant anyway. Full body, sweetish. Some raisins and prunes. Really lasting finish, with the alcohol a bit too obvious. Overall, a really fine beer, but it’s too warming. A sharing beer. 120818

Big thanks to Joel for sharing this whale! Wow I think I may have just tried the best barley wine ever. The nose is just incredible: hints of vanilla, oak, sweet malt..the list goes one. Very easy to drink and incredibly smooth, ABV masked very well here. Incredible!
