4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Barleywine with a strong feel of bourbon which this was fermented in 23 year ild barrells of top bourbon out there. I enjoyed it after the fifth sip. Dry to the palate with non lacing head and sweet aroma. Not a drink fast beer. How can u consider this beer when its more hard liquor and wine then beer. On that note a barleywine is what it is. 100% rating gets a 4.6 from me on ratebeer.com. I did enjoy it mostly.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JUL 17, 2012 22oz bottle - 2011 vintage.
Deep amber brew with some tan head. I could smell this beer all day - aromas of toffee, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate, oak, bourbon, and vanilla. Crazy complex, especially as it warmed. Flavor is just as good - brown sugar, dark fruit, caramel, toffee, and tons of bourbon. Wow!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours deep brown with a thin mocha head...dissipates quickly. Aroma is bourbon forward but not too hot...some dark fruit and a hint of vanilla. Flavor is complex...nice bourbon and vanilla...light candied fruit but not too sweet...faint oak and chocolate. Mouthfeel is full and creamy with a warming with a bourbony cherry chocolate finish.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Brown pour with no head or lace. Aroma is large dried fruit, abv, and caramel malt. Flavor mirrors aroma with a very nice abv warmth that is sweetly balanced. Smooth body with good carbonation. A top notch beer.

650 ml bottle generously shared by redmagik99. Thanks Matt. Pours a dark reddish copper with a small head disappears relatively quickly. The aroma is vanilla, some chocolate, a bit of bourbon, oak, caramel, toffee, and tootsie roll, as well as a bit of alcohol. Quite nice. The taste is very sweet with vanilla oak and bourbon. There is also caramel, toffee and tootsie roll. The finish has light alcohol as well as a light bitterness. Full bodied. A bit sweeter than I would prefer, but not syrupy. Low carbonation. An enjoyable beer. I can certainly see how people love it, but a bit too sweet for me. I preferred the Arctic Devil that I drank next to it.

22oz bottle from stoutfest. Rating #108. Dark reddish brown pour with a tan head. Dark fruits and a little booze, very rich. Great flavor, more booze, rich dark caramel and fruit, awesome. (2286)

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark crimson pour with a whispy eggshell head that didnít really leave a speck of lacing but this one has legs. Thick and syrupy, that sticks to the glass and palate. Maple, molasses, vanilla, bourbon and wood in the nose. Not robust but divine when inhaled. The flavor was a bit sweet for my liking. Somewhat like eating a spoon full of brown sugar (tell me you havenít done that when you were a kid...and a week ago!). Mrs. Butterworth, Grandmaís Molasses, Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, oak, butterscotch, and toffee all there. Not at all hot, just sweet. Good brew and great idea using the Rare barrels, but not world-class in my opinion.

Live rate! Generously shared by Boltz - thank you, sir! Gorgeous bottle - one of my all time favorites. Pours plum in color with a fleeting beige head. Smells of oats and brown sugar. Tastes of caramel, red licorice, sweet malts, vanilla, and muted bourbon. Luxurious.

Poured into a snifter. Thanks to beersis81 for this.
3.5 A: Dark brown color and based on the pour it looked clear. An aggressive pour yielded only about half a finger of short lived, brown foamy/frothy head. No lacing. Big ABV let me cut this beer a break.
5.0 S: Iím shocked to discover that the second use of the barrels has resulted in a beer with almost as much bourbon component as BCS Rare. Indeed, bourbon is the first thing I noticed and it smells wonderful. Pappy 23 must be some good stuff. Anyway, the bourbon gives notes of leather, apple, pear, melon, earth, tobacco and a touch of spice. Oak and vanilla from the barrels. Underneath, the base beer shines just as bright. Brown sugar is featured prominently with caramel on par. Toffee and molasses to follow. Plum and raisin fruitiness. Booze is well in check, but is still quite detectable and it integrates well. The smell of BCS Rare is well ingrained into this and for that Iím quite grateful.
4.5 T: Delicious! Toffee and caramel sneak up on you and thrust themselves into the limelight, but still are shadowed by brown sugar. Huge raisin and tobacco flavor that seems to be coming from the bourbon. Lots of leather, light peat, melon, and apple. Big plum and black currant fruitiness. Molasses underneath. Lots of BCS in the taste as well. It actually tastes a lot like BCS with aspects of barleywine thrown in. The big ABV is realized and leaves a warming throughout and especially on the finish. This is certainly tasty, but itís a little less seemlessly integrated than BCS Rare.
5.0 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation for the style. Rich, slightly chewy with a pleasant creaminess. I love me a good, thick bourbon aged beer.
5.0 D: Iím so very happy that I have another bottle of this. Itís one hell of a beer. Goose Island does big beer better than anyone else. So rich and complex that you canít help but love it. Solid all around, but it isnít much of a looker like any of the BCSs.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of carmel, toffee, plum, raisin, light oak, light vanilla and light molasses. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of carmel, prune, raisin, toffee, oak and light vanilla with a smooth warming lingering toffee finish.
