COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel Aged Barleywine. 11% ABV, 60 IBUs. Loosely based off our 2000th brew at our production facility,we revived this hybrid American / English Barley Wine for a special treat. Coming out of the tanks we aged it in barrels previously used for Bourbon County Rare Stout (Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year) to add another layer of complexity.

Note: The original release of this beer (2010) was done in regular bourbon barrels. The 2011 and bottle release saw the use of the barrels formerly used for Bourbon County Rare. We are not seperating these as I do not believe the bottles will clarify this. The original release also saw an 11% ABV, with the bottling seeing closer to 13.4%

Bottle shared by Minderbinder with tom10101, David and myself. Huge thanks for this rare treat Francis (not sure who brought the Leon or this so I’m just settling it this way)! Pours dark brown with a head that quickly subsides. Aroma-wise it was full of sweet malts and some licorice. Boozy at times, it makes up for it with its full body and malt forward taste. Flavor is again malts with a nice bourbon touch. I thought it would be more intense on the bourbon but it seems that the second use of these barrels makes for a more drinkable beer. Overall a very nice barleywine I can really see why it is so highly rated! Again, maybe if we didn’t drink the CCB Leon first this would have come up on top but does it really matter? I think not. Two excellent world class beers!

Huge thanks to the Goose Island crew for passing tastes of this around at Brouwer’s for Migration Week. Never thought I’d try it. Nice brown barley wine. Very, very sweet nose. Brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cookie dough... sweet Jesus. Flavor follows, adding raisins and a hint of that lovely lovely bourbon, but there’s a hint of some oxidation about midway through. Goes on to finish beautifully. Matt was right; this is just a bit past its prime.

Bottle pour at brouwers. Dark brown color. Light carbonation. Subtle whiskey aroma. Flavor is sickly sweet with modest whiskey flavor. Potentially past its prime. Great beer nonetheless.

The layering of this is quite interesting. There are real complex notes there. Lots and lots of caramel. You can vaguely taste the pappy van winkle barrels. It's pretty un expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle in a teku. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of lots of bourbon and oak and vanilla, toffee and caramel and roasted malts, some alcohol, some hop bitterness. Flavor a great combo of the barrels and oak and vanilla and the barley wine plus light notes of the stout. Thick texture. An amazing beer.

Poured from bottle to glass. Dark hue with brown head. Aroma is bourbon, toffee, vanilla, ethanol, raisins. Mouthfeel is great with a full body and smooth carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a nice astringent bitterness in the following and an ethanol finish. Overall this was a nice brew.

Bottle share at de Garde. Pours a translucent deep brown, rich and sweet aroma, lots of oaky and caramel notes. Hot! Body full and very woody, finish sweet, sticky, smoky. Nice but not as good as others have said.

Bottle share. Thanks Dustin! Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of bourbon, fruit, vanilla, and malt. Taste is bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit, malt, caramel, and brown sugar. Very special, perhaps best Barley Wine I have tasted.

Pour from a bomber at Heidelberg Goose Island Migration Week. Pours a golden brown with no head. Aroma is super subtle and well balanced. Aroma is slight sugar, vanilla and the smoothness of Pappy Van Winkle. Taste is very, very smooth and by far the most well balanced barley wines I’ve ever had. Palate is just so very well balanced that you could take several sips and identify so many different characters.
