Dark brown body with an ok tan ring... Nose of all roasted chocolate, one noted but good... Taste is more roasted chocolate with a little bitter coffee on the finish, not bad but the feel is too carbonated so I’m torn... Average, wouldn’t seek out

As the line for Rare began to snake around the park I managed to get a pour of this decent imperial stout. For being second runnings it stands up amazing well to some of the other beers on offer. Being able to compare it to three variations of BCS was a good way to find out that Goose Island can not only make great beer but they can make great beer from their leftovers. The inky black base was more fluid and supple than BCS but still mysterious. A smoky malt laden finish was ideal for setting the tone for the Rare to come.

UPDATED: JUL 1, 2011 don’t you hate cmubeerman??? him aside, this beer fucking rocked. first of all, how the hell do make something this good off the 2nd runnings of a malt? 2nd of all, how the hell did this have 9%, it tasted like 4.5%. 3rd of all, the nitrogen kicked ass. my first thought tasting this was that this would be a great beer to feed to someone who claimed guinness is good. i went on a second date with a girl last night and i must admit that when she talked about guinness and how much she loves it in spite of its heaviness and high alcohol content i put her in her place. emerged victorious nonetheless. don’t you hate cmubeerman??

Draft at Rattle n Hum during the Goose Island Event with Streets and Kyle. Pours a deep, dark brown body with creamy half-finger head. Aroma is much malty than the regular BCS, with notes of milk chocolate, roast, caramel malts, and milk. Mouthfeel is much lighter and creamier - tastes like a Goose Island take on Guinness - with notes of creamy bitter chocolate, sweet chocolate malts, roast, cream, and milk.

Tap at Sugar Maple. This beer was simply superb. Pours to a really dark brown/blackish body with a tall creamy tan head. The aroma is roasty black patent and licorice with some sweet molasses. The flavor is super roast black patent malt, molasses, brewers licorice. Super smooth and balanced. The palate is medium bodied. Malty texture but clean on the finish.

Predominant in my nose was roasted malting, reminded me of a certain breakfast stout, flavor carried on with that roastedness, perhaps some wood flavoring ,little of the actual vanilla and alcohol aspects of the BCS. Charming,still a sipper at 9%

Draft at Whole Foods LP. Pours black with a tan head. Looks a bit thin and fizzy, lacking the full body of most RISs. Nose is a touch grainy, roast and some cocoa. A bit burnt, but not bad. Some hops peek through as well. On taste, it is simple. Not bad for a small beer, but insubstantial. Strong roast but a bit thin bodied. Very drinkable. Not overly hot. Not a bad beer in general, just doesn’t work for me.

Goose island Lazarus. On tap at the goose island takeover... Pours a
darker shade of cola with reddish edges towards the sides and afluffy
off-beige head... Cola-ey with cocoa and mild chocolate overtones, a
little bit of yeast thrown in... Soft creamy mouthfeel with chocolate
and caramel. Nice for a second running for sure but doesn’t add all
that much to the lineup.

Sampled on tap at the GI Invasion Event at SmallBar Fullerton (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice dark blackish hue, a brownish ruby bottom with good lacing light brown frothy head. Laces well, stays as a decent layer. Aromas are roasty malts, pretzels, and touches of coffee. Some cocoa, faint touch of more biscuits and pretzels. Initial is medium bodied, touches of wet malts, pretzels, biscuits, and toffee. Initial is heavier end of medium bodied, cocoa, roast, biscuits and toffee. A touch of coffee, roast, toast, and biscuits. Some good stout qualities, but a bit light and and toasty. Solid, especially for a 2nd runnings beer. I found this beer palatable, lighter than expected, but a bit forgetful.
