GTMW 2009 (Cask): Mostly opaque with a small creamy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of coffee, milk chocolate, walnuts, resiny and herbal hops, faint acidic fruit and smoke. The taste starts mildly sweet before a hit of hop bitterness come into play. The finish is a combination of coffee and hop with some dark fruit twang. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy, velvety. A fine cask conditioned stout, I like it.

Pours a deep black with a big note of grapefruit. This blends into a complex stout that shows coffee, chocolate, and deep grains. The hops sit nicely in the background.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Enjoyed on tap at Goose Island Clybourn at Rare Stout Night which was part of Chicago Craft Beer week. Appearance pitch black with rich off white head. Aroma not really present, maybe a bit of roasted malt in the back end. Taste is smooth, an easy drinker, milky with roasted malt and chocolate notes. Good, solid stout.

Reviewed from notes.
Pours pitch black with a nice tan head. Fairly persistent at a half-finger or so. Nose is nice with a really fantastic combination of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and a bit of resiny pine.
The taste really kind of loses the hops and sticks to the stout base, which I’ll only complain about a little bit as that is quite nice as well. The roasted character shines with good coffee and chocolate. Good body with a nice dry roast. Drinks quite well and is a beautiful concept.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is supposed to be a hoppy stout, this is not a hoppy stout at all, totally misguided by the brewery on this one...A black pour with a light tan head, ok retenion but not a ton of lacing...The aroma is roasted coffee with a bit of somke, no hops...Taste is more of the same, roasted coffee. As it warms finally a ray of hops show through.
A so-so stout, English style, not hoppy, and not worth getting, especially if when you think of hoppy stout you are expecting Darkness or Night Stlalker.

On tap at Birdsall House during their Goose Island event. Pours a thick black with brown highlights under a thin white. Cocoa, roast, chocolate syrup. Slight sweet, cocoa, caramel, and vanilla. Smooth, cocoa with a little hop character behind it. Nice and rich, estery alcohol on the finish, with some lingering roast.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft on tap at Sheffields (Chicago, IL). Pours a brownish black hue, not opaque, but fairly dark with lighter edges, a small khaki head laces small, fillms around the edges and clings. Aromas are lightly citrusy floral hops, decent roastiness, touch of sweet cocoa. A bit light. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied packing some decent roast and cocoa up front with some citrusy and floral hops as it moves towards the back. A touch of toffee, biscuits, cocoa, and more roasted barley interfere, the hops provide a decent bitterness. A bit one-dimensional, but it is indeed as it is advertised. A hoppy American stout, lighter bodied but still decent roastiness.

Draft. Got as part of a sampler at GI Clybourne pub.
Dark hoppy stout. Subtle chocolate and roast malt aromas in the nose. Dark black color with a tan head. The aroma is more minimal than I would have expected, not a knock in my opinion. The flavor is ok, roasted malts along with some leather. Medium mouthfeel, a little lighter than I expected. Good lace left on the glass.

tap at blind tiger. tastes like a dark IPA. arouma of hops and detergent. Nice dark chocolate and bitter hops. Some nice fruity notes mixes well with dark chocolate malts. Tricky to define, not sure it belongs in sweet stouts.
