A sour brown kriek made with Michigan sour cherries aged in oak barrels for over 2 years with a roselare yeast culture.

A muffled "pfft" escapes as I open the bottle, and a pink-tinged array of bubbles rapidly fizzles to a slight ring on the edge. Body is a mostly clear black-cherry skin with lighter magenta tints on the edges.
A wonderful balance between malic acid (cherries), lactic acid, brett tartness and some acetic barrel character. Seems complex upon the first sniff after pouring. What it also seems is perfectly clean and vibrant. No diacetyl, no heavy/grainy wood tannins, no underattenuated malt sweetness....Cherries are deep and very "fleshy". That is to say, more cherry pulp, flesh and sugar than actual tart cherry acids. The wild yeasts seem to do most of the work in that department. Some funk is added to the mix with warming (light sulphur, creating a barnyardy-like element). Aroma strength is only medium, not sure if this is due to the lower carbonation or just time spent in barrel. No alcohol or flaws noted. A spot-on Belgian kriek nose and it certainly dosent betray its American descent.
The flavor bears the answer to the aromaís relatively weak strength; itís quite light itself, with some shortcomings due to a bit of wateriness and an overabundance of coconut-like tannin coming from the barrel. Surprisingly fizzy, sharp carbonation does not help with the already light body and the malt has been overattenuated to the point that the tartness seems to have nothing to sink in to or meld with. All that out of the way, the beer does plenty right. The cherry flavor is as delicious and authentic as it comes, reminding very much of 3 Fonteinenís Intens Red. Just like that beer, this one is a full-on tart cherry juice show, with very strong lactic sourness behind it. Itís interesting that they use Rodenbach yeast in the barrels and the Belgian character of that really shows through. I think where Rodenbach gets it right, however, is in its addition of the caramel malts and acetic acids that produce some balancing sweetness and ultimately, more depth. Still, itís hard to be mad at such a lovely cherry and bacteria/wild yeast character, malt structure or not. I still gave 3F Intens Red a 4.0 and this one is pretty close to that. Could probably pull this out of the barrels a bit sooner. Will certainly be trying the other batches of this.

2012. Pours red amber/brown small head. Aroma is red wine, lots of oak, sour cherries, funk, lacto. Taste follows suit - sour cherry, heavy oak, funk. Good balance with slight acidity that is not overbearing. better now than it was fresh.

Brown body with ruby highlights and a medium, quickly vanishing brown head. Aroma of sour cherries, sugar, grape, wood. Light to medium body, sticky mouthfeel, soft, round. Flavor is sweet: sour cherry, grape, berries, acidic, wood; some earthy, yeast undertones; lightly spiced.

From the 12/2013 3R6P gathering +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-brown color with a medium sized foamy beige head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was tart, sour, dryish and chalky with a spritzy note of Pez and Sweettart candies. The flavor was very tart, sour and dry with chalk, Sweettart candied and a spritzy and effervescent presend.e Very long finish. Medium body. Solid.

Bottle. Frothy White fair mostly deminishing head. Dark amber colour. Light malty and hoppy and powerfull sour aroma. Moderate bitter nice sour flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Oily palate. nice.

Amber with a red note, hazy. Has a white head, diminishing. Heavy aroma, faint cherries, almond, acid, sugars, oak, great. Flavor starts light sweet, heavy acid, moderate bitterness. more cherries and oak. Not astringent.

22oz bomber I got in a trade, thanks Devin! Aroma is sour cherries and oak. Flavors are sour cherries, oak, and a real nice funk. Super balanced sour, very tart in the nose and upfront in the mouth, goes down very smooth though. Another great goose island sour!
