4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
2012 on the bottle and drank in 2012. Clearly this shows it should be aged. Medium reddish - orange amber with fizzy, lasting, frothy, beige head. Nice lacing. Lovely sweet smell of malt, tropical fruit, caramel, and herbal elements with coriander, honey with notes of yeast.Crisp bubbly smooth medium oily body. Sweet butter malt start with caramel, herbal yeast, tropical fruit and well balanced against the earthy spicy dry finish. Beautiful beer and look forward to an aged version.

[Bottle / 2009 / ~4 years old] Thanks, Kevin! Foggy copper with lighter, amber edges, almost fully opaque - only a little translucency when held directly in the light. No head, only a wispy, white collar. Aroma is full of drub, musty funk, damp cellar floor, cobweb, barnyard stalls... Wow! Wasnít expecting funk like this. Nice balance of tartness in the aroma, too; sharp apple skins, lemon juice, & a hint of acetic vinegar. Taste has lots of damp, cheesecloth funk, abrupt apple skin & stone fruit acidity, lemon flesh, light vinegar, & a strong, tannic, barrel presence in the back-end. Light, effervescent carbonation... puzzled by the lack of head. Not at all what I was expecting from this beer, but it was pretty damn good.
[Tap / 2013 / Fresh] Fresh Matilda is a much more subtle experience. Still funky, still a little tart, but not nearly at such vibrant ends of the spectrum. You could say that makes it more balanced... Because it is. But I think I prefer it with some age. Still a pretty solid brew when fresh, though.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a hazy orange. Nice long lasting head. Smells of banana and apricot with a lingering funk. Taste of pepper, banana, apple and barnyard funk. It has a candied apple/cherry finish. Taste a lot like a cherry jolly rancher. Very dry finish. I'm not usually a fan of the Belgium yeast esters but this one is very manageable. This is a very nice and not too over the top funky beer. It's not the best I've ever had and it surely isn't the worse. It's right in the middle.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2012 vintage. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a cloudy orange color. The eggshell-colored head is fluffy and bubbly, about two fingers high. Lacing is splotchy and inconsistent, but definitely exists.
S: This is funky, but not overly so. Notes of earth and...um...funk help balance out its notes of bread, apple, and pear. Thereís some spicing which is very subtle, too. While itís not the most complex, the notes it uses are very well done and very enjoyable.
T: The first flavors are quite fruity, bright, and somewhat sugary. Not only does this bring the typical apple and pear notes, but strong citrusy qualities are also existent. The funk is very subtle, creating a balancing note with its sweeter flavors. The finish is also lightly biscuity. Much like Duvel, it isnít super complex, it just uses itís handful of notes brilliantly to deliver a killer drinking experience.
M: As expected, itís fizzy and light, with no hints of alcohol anywhere. The finish is damn-near bone dry. Itís light enough where itís pretty damn drinkable.
O: This one is pretty close to Duvel in terms of quality, but perhaps not quite there. Who cares?! Itís still freaking excellent. Iíd really be intrigued in aging this one even further, too.

12 oz pour, hazy orange amber hue with tiny particles, medium foamy head, some lacing, smells a bit tart and funky, tastes about the same with some spice (pepper/coriander,) some candy sweetness, yeast come through, more Belgian than pale ale, interesting

Had on draft and had not had in a couple of years, nice funky aroma. Flavor was spicy and tart. Was so funky I asked to taste the Jolly Pumpkin beer next to it just to be sure the beer was not from the wrong tap lol! Great beer spicy tart some pepper.

Light amber color with a foamy white head from the tap. Year and spice in the nose. Thick candi sugar sweetness with bitter orange peel, some spice and an almost bread doughy yeast. A bit thin. Nice easy drinking Belgian.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle - dark gold colour with slim white head. Fruity aroma with some barnyard, smells like a cider. Tastes a bit like one too, lots of fruit, spicey, medicinal, some hops, medium mouthfeel, quite highly carbonated. Interesting...
