3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUN 16, 2014 Compared a 2010 and 2014 bottle side by side. Fresh bottle was a mostly clear golden orange with a persistent white head that settled to a film. 2010 bottle was very murky amber with same white head that settled to a ring and dollop. Aroma of 2014 has Belgian yeast fruitiness and some caramel sweetness along with slight coriander and phenolic note. 2010 aroma has tart apple and pear with a vinyl quality and hint of grain. Taste of fresh bottle has Belgian yeast fruitiness, clove, some toastiness and mild pepper. 2010 bottle has a mild tartness with some faint lemon and apple fruitiness, some grain and some cooked vegetable flavor. Mouthfeels are different also with new bottle being more creamy and full bodied while the older bottle is more crisp and carbonated with a lighter body. I much preferred the newer bottle to the older one and really enjoyed the 2014’s flavors.
2013 Pours a dark golden orange with big soapy head that sticks around and great lacing. Aroma of juicy fruit barnyard and clove spiciness. Taste starts with some sweet fruit like apricots, then the funkiness sets in mid palate with the clove and pepper. Decent amount of bitterness and a phenolic flavor. Medium bodied with an oily texture and lively carbonation. Finishes dry. Good but a bit too much of the phenolic flavor to make it a favorite.

Hazy amber pour with a fairy fluffy white head that leaves a decent amount of lace. Lots of fruit and floral notes on the nose with a hint of funkiness. Quite similar on the palate with a dry, slightly tart finish.

Not much of a good specimen of the Belgian Wheat style. Kind of bitter/sour and not in a traditional rich, yeasty Belgian kind of way. Disappointing. Not sur why it is otherwise rated so highly other than it might be a bad specimen from Mactoberfest.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice golden color, fruity and floral aroma. Flavor is hard to place - fruity but also a bit... musty? Hard to describe it but definitely enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours deep orange/golden/copper, slightly off white head, frothy, medium lacing. Aroma immediately spicey, cloves, cinnamon, hints of bubblegum and banana on the nose, paired with slightly fruity notes (nondescript), slightly tart. Highly carbonated, a lot more banana on the taste than the nose, tartness does not register on the palate - but the bottle is only six months old - some sweetness, quite a bit of wheat protein presence but clarity and Brett doesn’t account for it. . . Very faint caramel present, as with a lollipop character.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Smells sourly of spontanely fermenting yeasts, hints of urine but also with malty sweetness. Tastes like dry white wine, malt, mild pale ales and some cheese. Very complex and well-composed beer - I like it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
A better Belgian than Belgium can brew. Pours an unfiltered amber with a small head. Aroma is of grapes, yeast, and basement. Tastes of yeast, plums, candy, apples, and sugar. Has a medium body with tingly carbonation and a light vinous aftertaste. Very well balanced beer.

Pours a dark orange, honey color, small head, some lacing. Aroma is Belgian spices, clove, some banana but there’s a feeling of complexity here. Taste is yeasty with a complex spice feeling. A slight bitterness at the end which is awesome and great balance. A very nice brew!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Superb Belgian from......Chicago? USA does it best (and worst) when it comes to beer. This Illinois beaut is no exception, glowing opaque copper with a crisp white foam. Smells of white grapes, sweet piss, honey, wheat, yeast, basement, raisins and earthy musk. Exceptionally smooth and tasty. Perhaps best described by a friend new to the style as "everything I like about the idea of wine without any of the bad shit I don’t like". A wee bit of spiciness and berries in the taste as well, very mildly bitter with an enjoyable dry fruity finish. Excellent stuff, this.

"nice fruit and spice aroma. yeasty, but mellow. a touch of hops mingles with the spiciness and sweet in the flavor. quite good all the way around. well crafted brew. surprisingly, the weak link in a Sophie-Pere Jaques-Matilda tasting."
