4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Good Belgian. I am not crazy about the rest of the beers I have had from goose island, but I like this one (others are not bad, just not in my wheel house). I know AB bought a stake in this company, but I doubt that impacts the bottle of Matilda I enjoyed tonight. I usually like my Belgians a little hotter than this one is, but a break from the really high abv wonít kill me. Good job, will buy again.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hereís the thing - I havenít rated for months, but I have tasted literally over a hundred beers since my last visit.
So whatís the diff, why the special attention?
1. Itís a special, very special occasion.
2. This no ordinary beer! 2009 pre Imbev
3. Iíve been drinking this beer since itís introduction (Iím from Chicago and have been involved in the beer community almost 25 years)
This beer is special, even with the take-over. (I already said that, sooooory.)
This beer is unique to the provenance.
This beer has something to offer the US brew community.
Matilda is extra ordinary. It is the first, as far as I can tell, American ale in this category of any note. None - let me restate that - maybe few but only some, of the other beers in this category were around when it was introduced!
Now it is #25. Wow.
PS this is not an Imbev advert. I like this beer.
Think about it: what makes this beer deserve special merit?
A gold GABF?
The fact that it may have been the first on the American scene?
I remember, perhaps 20 years ago, Greg Hall mentioning a trip to Belgium, perhaps the first among many.
I remember the introduction of Belgium styled ales into the Goose line.
From Belgium 31 years ago I had a flashback and some one said "Not much of a good specimen of the Belgian Wheat style..."
Are you sh*ting me you f****ní m****n?
This is a classic Dubbel, may it hit you in the head and die of the XTC.
(This person is in need of a beerbrain ImPlant!)
What you have is a beer that is an off-spring. It is born of this country and the aspects of itís terroir, are you listening AbbyRoad? Itís uniqueness is a value of itís existence.
And so we have the uniqueness of american beers, whether originated here or derived from a special place elsewhere.
Learn your history and enjoy, but donít misplace, whether here or Imbev - This beer is sweet and I hope will flourish...
Look at the listings - I have tried most of them. Cheers!!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy amber pour with a fairy fluffy white head that leaves a decent amount of lace. Lots of fruit and floral notes on the nose with a hint of funkiness. Quite similar on the palate with a dry, slightly tart finish.

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Not much of a good specimen of the Belgian Wheat style. Kind of bitter/sour and not in a traditional rich, yeasty Belgian kind of way. Disappointing. Not sur why it is otherwise rated so highly other than it might be a bad specimen from Mactoberfest.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice golden color, fruity and floral aroma. Flavor is hard to place - fruity but also a bit... musty? Hard to describe it but definitely enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours deep orange/golden/copper, slightly off white head, frothy, medium lacing. Aroma immediately spicey, cloves, cinnamon, hints of bubblegum and banana on the nose, paired with slightly fruity notes (nondescript), slightly tart. Highly carbonated, a lot more banana on the taste than the nose, tartness does not register on the palate - but the bottle is only six months old - some sweetness, quite a bit of wheat protein presence but clarity and Brett doesnít account for it. . . Very faint caramel present, as with a lollipop character.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Smells sourly of spontanely fermenting yeasts, hints of urine but also with malty sweetness. Tastes like dry white wine, malt, mild pale ales and some cheese. Very complex and well-composed beer - I like it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
A better Belgian than Belgium can brew. Pours an unfiltered amber with a small head. Aroma is of grapes, yeast, and basement. Tastes of yeast, plums, candy, apples, and sugar. Has a medium body with tingly carbonation and a light vinous aftertaste. Very well balanced beer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a dark orange, honey color, small head, some lacing. Aroma is Belgian spices, clove, some banana but thereís a feeling of complexity here. Taste is yeasty with a complex spice feeling. A slight bitterness at the end which is awesome and great balance. A very nice brew!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Superb Belgian from......Chicago? USA does it best (and worst) when it comes to beer. This Illinois beaut is no exception, glowing opaque copper with a crisp white foam. Smells of white grapes, sweet piss, honey, wheat, yeast, basement, raisins and earthy musk. Exceptionally smooth and tasty. Perhaps best described by a friend new to the style as "everything I like about the idea of wine without any of the bad shit I donít like". A wee bit of spiciness and berries in the taste as well, very mildly bitter with an enjoyable dry fruity finish. Excellent stuff, this.
