Bottle. Nice Christmas in a glass look -- rich and deeply red with a solid head. The aroma is bountiful, rife with robust malt and a hint of winter spice. But this drinks quite evenly, without abashedness, certainly sessionable for th Noel season. (#3774, 12/25/2009)

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I had this at the Clybourn brewpub after FoBAB 2008. It poured a deep chestnut body with a bubbly head that produced little of any lace. The aroma is mildly hoppy (floral) and toasty. I didn’t really catch the rye in here. It tasted of toasted whole wheat bread with dark malt and a balancing bitterness. Not really impressive, but I was probably jaded after the day at the festival.

[3682-20110416] 355mL bottle. Popcorn aroma has lightly toasted caramel malt note. Clear, dark amber body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Toasted bread crusts flavour has a sweet bread crumb note to it. Medium body. Drinkable, interesting underlying dimension. (7/3+/7+/3/15) 3.5

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 1, 2010 Sample poured from a bottle at Cincy Beerfest. Pours an unusual orange-brown color with some cloudiness and a small tan head that doesnít last long. I didnít realize this was a rye beer until looking it up later but definitely picked up on that in the nose, with notes of caramel malts and other spices. Flavor also has a lot of rye, with notes of toast, earthy hops, caramel malts, nutmeg, and pepper. Medium bodied, with active carbonation and a sharp bite from that and the spices. Dry, spicy finish. Interesting beer, not at all what I expected. RE-RATE: Had at The Royale on a Tuesday night beer showcase, 11/30/10. This has a smooth, rich, nutty aroma and flavor that didnít hit me as hard the first time I tried it. I really enjoyed it this time around, though. Not a whole lot of other notes to add except that this is a really nice sessionable beer, even if the ABV is well out of true "mild" range.

Sampled during Cellarís Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening beer tasting, Pours a clear light copper amber brew with an average off-white head that has some nice retention and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, a hint of cloves, rye, some chocolate and flowery hops. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of caramel malt, some bready biscuits, flowery hops and a hint of cloves. Finish is semi-dry and has a light bitterness with a caramel and clove aftertaste.

Tap at RNH- one of my other favorites of the night. Pours a mostly clear woody copper with a thin lasting head and nice lace. Aroma is a nice big fully nutty brown and rye malts, moderate caramel sweetness, earthy tones, big warming biscuit and light fruity esters. Flavor is doughy, clean spicy zesty rye malts, toast, light fruits, caramel, lightly bitter in the end- mostly clean and fairly full body- I like it !
