4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Ceebs25 (503) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - JUL 15, 201022 oz bottle. Now this is my kind of impy stout. The dry hopping is quite effective as it adds another element to the beer that is quite refreshing (not that bourbon barrel aging is such a bad thing either). A rich and malty, yet hoppy and mild aroma. Some powdery, chocolate nutty cookie wafer malts, maple syrup, light vanilla, and molasses, along with earth, pine, and a twinge of booze. The pour had a fingers width of milk chocolate head that sat atop a oily dark and opaque cola colored body. Upon drinking, the feel of this beer is real close to perfection. A milky creaminess, yet slightly oily, with a strong flavor projection without a hint of hard alcohol. The flavors here all work nicely as well. Wonderful balance. Rich dark and nutty chocolate malts start things off, as well as molasses, cookie, and slight berry fruit. This notes stay around but just combine nicely into a neutral, pleasant finish with earth, pine, and mild citrus. The overall experience was immensely positive. So so well done.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Sikash (175) - North Carolina, USA - MAY 23, 2013
Pours a nice dark color with a tan foamy head. Aroma is nice and rich, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Flavor is sweet bitter with notes of chocolate and coffee with some roasted malt. Finish is a bitter alcoholic finish. Mouthfeel is bitter full with decent carbonation. Overall this is an awesome beer.

Bottle from Wegman’s Leesburg. Pours black with a quarter inch of khaki foam. Not much on the nose. Slighty burned malt and licorice on the tongue. Theres also a bit of sweetness that comes through. Taste lingers a bit. Eh! I’m not really feeling this one.

Tar black with a tan head. Notes of cocoa, coffee and molasses. You can tell the foundation is the Bourbon County stout but with a dry finish. Very nice beer but makes me want the real thing - a Bourbon County Stout!

Wow same base as Bourbon County, but dry hopped instead of barrel aged? What? This stout is awesome, but still not as good as its aged brother. I had this on tap at Nevins, a local watering hole. Poured a light chocolate colored 2 finger head and the beer itself was the color of obsidian and just as opaque. Chocolate was a feature of this beer but the hops really come through. More of a lighter stout in your mouth but flavor is the key and keeps you wanting more. I would love to have this as a warm-up to the Bourbon County. That may not be a good idea,11% ABV to 15%...on the other hand, maybe that is the start of a good night! If you see this on a menu, order it.

3.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 EtTuCthulhu (398) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - APR 29, 2013
This brew’s aroma is overwhelmingly (read: disgustingly) boozy with very slight hints of hops and toasted caramel malts, but the appearance is an opaque black color with a brown ring of foam on top of the edge of the liquid. The taste is a lot better than the smell, for there is no boozy burn or oiliness to the beer at all; rather, the taste is mildly umami, mildly sweet, and slightly bitter, and the mouthfeel combines a medium body, thin texture, soft carbonation, and long finish, which results in the second of these two facets being inappropriate for the style that this beer claims to be.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2013 Cola black with a cocoa colored head. Aroma is chocolate, a bit of coffee, and a piney hop buzz pulled together with some booze. Taste is more of the same: rich with malt, mole-asses, liquorice and prune, with high alcohol evident from start to finish. $10/22oz
2.5 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 PhillyCraft (1975) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 16, 2013
Sample at Pour house, pours black, light off white head, not much lacing. Sticky palate. Aromas are barrel, nail polish remover and acetone. Taste is toffee, bourbon, chocolate, smoked malt, and caramel. Thicker bodied. I enjoyed everything but aroma but when u factor in that this was produced by the man...ill pass. Buy American!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 akoeninger (156) - Wisconsin, USA - APR 13, 2013
UPDATED: APR 24, 2013 Pours very black with tan head. You first notice the floral, citrus smell of the hops but then as it continues you get the chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt you would expect. Hints of alcohol as well. This beer tastes complex! You get the hops first, then a yummy chocolate flavor with some alcohol. Where a barrel-aged beer would turn sweet and bourbon this gets bright and floral. This brings out more refreshing take on a normally heavy style. It?s just good and different. The hops do not dominate but come in subtly in a masterful way. The finish is still warming and roasted, yet tropically fresh.
