3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 andyhwcinc (1135) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 2, 2012
Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed after a long trip to Germany where I drank nothing but 3 different types of beers. This was a welcome home brew. Appearance a dark brown amber with a thin off white rim. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, nuts, hops, a lot of ingredients. Taste is incredibly smooth, moderate body and lightish carbonation, nice nutty finish, very light bitterness. It’s already gone, and now I’m sad. Very happy to have this back in production.

Draught. Deep, rich brown color. Pleasant, mild aroma. Mouthfeel a, little thin. Goes down nice and easy. Mild nutty flavor. Does not overwhelm the palate, left me wanting a little more.

Poured from bottle dated 3/5/12 into taster glass.
Aroma: malt, hops, nutty, chocolate
Appearance: fairly clear, little head that faded quickly, deep dark brown
Taste: medium sweet, light bitter, light sour
Palate: thin mouthfeel, thin body, slick nutty aftertaste or walnuts
Overall: Goose Island is bringing this back from retirement. I enjoyed the nutty aftertaste which got better as it warmed. It was a very light beer for as dark as it was.

Pours a hazy brown color with a thin off-white head. Aroma of hazelnut, toffee, and dark fruit. Hazelnut flavor with toffee sweetness and a touch of cherry. Deent lacing. Really nice beer.

From notes. First reviewed 11/16/2010. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
Nut Brown Ale pours a mahogany color with a cherry tint in the edges of the glass. A small light brown head forms upon pouring, composed of tightly packed small bubbles. The head, fades quickly, however, and leaves just a bit of lace on the glass.
Oily hazelnuts and roasted malt in the nose. Not much of a hop aroma here.
It starts out pleasantly sweet, with lightly roasted malt, milky coffee, and oily hazelnut. Light earthy hop presence at the end.
It is a little bit too bubbly to be really creamy, but it is almost there. Fuller than medium body.
It’s relatively smooth and somewhat creamy, but the flavor just does not pop. It’s a smooth session beer, but there are better browns out there.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 seymour (1099) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - DEC 7, 2011
UPDATED: MAY 3, 2012 Transferred from old tasting notebook: Tasted from bottle into pub pint glass. Poured a nice, clear copper brown. Distinctly English hop aroma, some bread and faintly fruity yeast esters, very nice. True-to-style flavors as well: mild malts, rich caramel malts, nuts, hints of apricot, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Really tasty. Too bad it’s since retired.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 6, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into a tall glass.
Appearance: Fairly dark brown with reddish highlights, with light tan head and slight lacing.
Aroma: Caramel and cherry is predominant, with a health dose of spiciness from the English hops. Much of the smell fades, leaving mostly a dry, nutty aroma.
Taste: Sweet caramel, cherry and other dark fruit upfront, before quickly drying out with toasted nuts, English hops and honey.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, medium body, pretty dry finish for a Brown Ale.
Overall: One of the better traditional English Brown Ales around. Or it WAS one of the better until they foolishly decided to axe it. Just a shame.
