Malty and sweet with a bitter finish. Not enough nut to make it a brown. The ’tobacco’ hints remind me of a Skoal can... But it is still enjoyable. Fairly complex compared to many Goose Island beers. It’s average- but probably gets its ’Hex Nut’ name from its metallic taste. Not a nut-brown beer, in my opinion.

Malty and a little to sweet for its own good, causing an unpleasant and sour finish. Nice brown color. Good but definitely not great.

Very malty tasting of toasted bread and roasted grains. Deep profile of nut-flavors evident. Very smooth and enjoyable.

A mighty fine dark rich beer with a lot of flavors to play with. I don’t know what a hex nut is, but if it tastes like the beer, then I’d like ’em.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2003 This is a rich brown ale that has a complicated flavor which combines hints of nut (it could use more on this end), chocolate and caramel. This stuff really starts tasting good after the first 1 or 2.

One of my all-time favorites for the style. Probably one of the best brown ales in America.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, nutty). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Finish is moderately bitter, lightly acidic. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Good flavor balance, but the aroma isn’t very inspiring.

Very rich, complex, almost tobacco-flavored brown ale. Great color and head retention. A very different and complex brown ale.

I was surprised to see I hadn’t rated this one, as I’ve had several and always thought it was pretty good. However, upon a second testing, I’ve noticed nothing amazing about this one. Caramel and the obvious nut are big. Just an average brown.
