Bottle. 6½ weeks past ’best before’. Pours a dark red/brown with a small beige head. Decent lacing. Intense aroma: roasted, malty and with a distinct dusty, wooden note. Faint notes of chocolate and smoke. Malty flavour – notes of bread; rye. Roasted. Wood again, as well as remote chocolate notes. Roasted finish with lingering coffee and particularly smoked notes. Overall quite interesting and pretty good, but a bit cloying in the long run. 05.12.10.

Bottle courtesy of Pollack, thanks a ton. Almost opaque dark brown pour, just about black, no head. Aroma was a delightful array of roasted malts, some cocoa and a touch of lactose. Flavors were similar, lightly roasted malts and some milk chocolate, everything in perfect amounts, balanced to perfection. Nice creamy mouthfeel, quite a feat with such a low alcohol content. Nothing rough about this one, smooth all around. About as good as it gets for the style, extremely well brewed.

On tap at the brewpub in Chicago. Dark brown. Aroma is hard roast, husky and earthy. Palate is soft, silky, but a little on the thin side. Flavours are hard roast with some minerally and earthy undertones, some coffee and chocolate too.

Poured from the tap into a tasting glass.
The color is a dark black with a finger of foamy brownish head and some slight lacing.
The smell is roasty with a nice malty flavor. Some sweet whipped cream flavor.
The taste is a bit biscuity with a toast like flavor. There is some toffee flavor that is a bit too sweet at first but then calms down into a nice creamy flavor toward the end.
The of this beer is pretty smooth and goes down easy. It feels a little large but does not behave light a big bodied beer with an easy refreshing feel.

Fresh and pleasant fragrance of roasted malt with mild aroma of coffee. Soft, round flavors of roasted malt and coffee. Gently lingering aftertaste of roasted malt and chocolate. Very nice!

12 oz. bottle from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee, WI. Pours dark brown ,and appears black in the glass, with a thin light khaki head. The aroma is rich roasted malt with just a touch of floral hops. The flavors of the roasted malt are not too overbearing and make for a very drinkable brew. The smoke from the malt is lingering on the finish but this only adds to the hearitness of this stout. This could be thought of as a session stout given its easy drinkability (and, of course, the low ABV). In my opinion it’s one of the better stouts out there.

12oz btl. Poured a dark medium bodied black with a frothy light tan head. An aroma of chocolate malt. Kind of an old bottle seeing how the sixers are now retired. A good thick chocolate roasted maltiness with a little bittersweet kick at the end. Bold has a bit of metallic oxidation that doesn’t lend well to the brew. I’ll have to have it on draft at the brewpub and re-rate.

Cask pull at Clybourn. Black with a small but very firm light tan head. Smooth chocolate, roasted grain and toasty malt aroma. Very balanced and smooth dark chocolate flavor with some oat fullness, light earthy bitterness, and touch of toasty and caramel sweetness. The body is just out of this world. Case in point for how good cask conditioning can treat a beer. If every cask beer could be presented this well, I would never want anything else (well, except for al the styles that need more carbonation...). So F-in’ smooth and silky. The oats add a great fullness as well. Despite the rich texture, it isn’t all that sweet, which make for a ridiculously drinkable beer, especially with the lower, very soft carbonation. Is this the best beer I’ve ever had at Goose Island? I can’t believe it took me this long to try it.

Bottle consumed during Online Birthday Party, October 16th, 2010. Very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of old leather armchairs and tobacco ash. A lot of carbonation at first, but sweetness develops, suggestive of fruit and cream. Went down very nicely.

Black colored with medium sized beige head. Sweetness dominates this roasted aroma with nice chocolate, creamy tone also here. Medium bodied, smooth palate. Flavor is chocolaty with stouty roastiness, aftertaste is chocolaty still.
