jollyraider (253), Los Angeles (Westwood), California, USA Apr 25, 2005 On cask at Cybourn: Tasty bw, too bad I gunned down that 5oz. sampler glass on the way out. Reminded me of a young Batch 6000. A bit fruity, lots of hops. My first beer on cask! Thanks to Ma Beth.
fiulijn (5860), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Nov 29, 2007 Draught at the brewpub, Clybourn location Cloudy brown color. Malty aroma and caramel. Strong body, with a lot of caramel and malt flavor, sweet toffee too, warming feeling; and to balance this, a very strong hopping, that leads to a mellow toffee final, very powerful Strong American Ale, excellent. Not as intriguing as the Matilda, not as interesting as the Père Jacques, but overwhelming. scraff (1662), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Nov 12, 2007 Tap @ GI Clybourn – Dark rusty brown with deep aromas of musty caramel, brown sugar coated pineapple, and hints of stale cookie. Rich tropical fruit flavors mingle with intense brown sugar tones, old dried citrus peel notes, and touches of ripe cherry. Full bodied, soft and smooth carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. A great winter sipper… holdenn (1150), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 30, 2007 On tap at clybourn. Pours a dark ruby brown with a creamy thin head. Aroma of red fruity and a malty "grain room" with alcohol and licorice. Creamy flavors. Red fruit, bourbon hints, chocolate hints, tar, toffee, caramel, and candied. The sweetness and tar are balanced well. Nice. BBB63 (3800), La Porte, Indiana, USA Oct 15, 2007 Tap at Clybourn and enjoyed with JSquire and MrFacto: Served in a snifter with a deep brown hue and ruby highlights. Topped by a surprising incredible lasting creamy head and left very good lace upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of honey, crystal, caramel, apricot, juniper, cardamom, rustic and earthy, pine needle and woody, NICE NOSE.
The taste starts with heavy rich sweet malts and a very fruity subtext. Oxidization and old hop middle ground before a spicy, woody and moderate alcohol finish. The mouth feel is oily and lush, sharp around the perimeter, warming after awhile. A hybrid between the American and English styled barley wines. Quite drinkable for the level of alcohol. (Let it warm, served far too cold) NobleSquirrel (668), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 7, 2007 Tap. Quite the malty brew. Surprising not a lot of sweetness, but tos of malt. Minimal bitterness, big mouth feel and rich. decent.
