Jokes (1449), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 13, 2006 Clear amber with a fluffy, big-bubbled head. The aroma is definitely malt-centric and shows a nice depth. Caramel, loads of whole grain, some light brown sugar sweetness. I’m having trouble identifying a couple of other components right now. The hops show some nice, Earthy bitterness and a hint of pinesap. The body is nice and full with a soft, almost non-existent carbonation. More malty goodness comes out in the flavor and those hops are stringent enough to stand up to the potent malts. Perhaps a hint of diacetyl comes out, but luckily, isn’t too strong. All told, this is pretty good. In some ways I wish this was brewed with a style in mind, because it’s hard to compare when their is no baseline. Unless it’s a Berliner Weisse, in which case it’s crap.
General_Gao (2509), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Dec 16, 2006 Cask at the Wrigleyville location. Clear copper color with a lasting off white head that laced the glass. Yeasty bread dough and light cider vinegar aroma. Very smooth mouth feel one would expect from a cask conditioned ale. Subdued fruity flavors of cherry and apple. Tart on the tongue with a slightly bitter finish. Eh.
