UPDATED: APR 22, 2014 Enjoyable, easy smooth beer, some toffe taste. I liked it, would love to try it on tap. Might be a bit to pricey to purchase again however.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rated on 7-19-2011 (Bottled on 01/07/11) The appearance is a medium sized frothy, fizzy tan head that mostly diminishes, dark brown opaque body, fizzy carbonation, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is malt, roasted, yeast, funky, sweet, and spicy. The taste is spice, malt, yeast, roasted, and funky. This beer has a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is tingly carbonation and this beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is quaffable and the roastiness comes out as the beer warms.

On tap at Zeno’s. Nice roasted barley nose, light spicy rye notes. Chocolate and some smoke. Dark brown-black clear with thin off-white head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Starts fairly dry with roasted barley, light smoke, and cocoa. Spicy rye character with light hop fruity finish. Medium smooth after.

Dark for looks light to taste. Pepe Nero is marketed as a Belgian style ale. Malty with notes of fruits and light pallet always leaves you wanting more. 7/10

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: we can detect very clearly notes of smoked meat; even smoked ham. aroma profile is rapidly decreasing leaving space for alcohol. Subtle notes of herbal hops are also showing up. Not very impressive aroma.
Appearance: Black with red glints and translucent. An enormous and eternal foamy head sticking to glass a bit and leaving some traces.
Taste: Attack is showing notes of smoke with a thin texture feel. Finish is dry with a little metallic aftertaste. Smoke accents are dominant with some molasses and anise notes. the use of roasted malts is giving it an earthy and ashy aspect with a very dry finish. Sparkling is active but not excessive; texture is somehow thin and herbal hops are mixing well with the roasted aspect of it’s flavor palette. Une bière hors norme, difficilement classable. Mais puisqu’il faut la classer dans un style, classons la dans saison. Mais avec de fortes tendances porter. Quand même agréable à boire.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
pours unclear medium dark brown-reddish with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. spicy yeastiness - pepper, red grape juice - fruity it is but awkward, grainy spiciness, cola, cherry coke, torrefied malts, bitter coffee, slightly ashy and smoky. lively carbonation - almost foamy, light body, dry bitter and lightly astringent grassy-spicy finish. blah.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
355 ml bottle.
Pours dark red, almost black color with a large off-white head. Aroma has lots of berries, some ripe fruits as well as some yeast, subtle spice notes on the background. Flavor is a bit malty, some dark berries, rye and faint caramel, yeast and subtle spices. I don’t really like the malt and rye notes here at all, Saisons should be refreshing and at least moderately citric and fruity, this attempt fails on both accounts. I’ve had better rye-saisons. A great disappointment.

bottle. Brown with small head. The peppery flavor here does not work for me at all. Medium malt body with some dark fruit and smoke.
